Donald F. Aschom died June 3, 2024 in Haslett, MI. An optimist and encourager, he met everyone with a smile and looked for the best in each person and situation.
Don was born March 24, 1928 to George and Edna Aschom, growing up in the Mississippi River town of Lansing. He graduated from Lansing High School in 1946. Don played basketball for Luther College, graduating in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.
He began his career with the Northwestern University Traffic Institute in Evanston, IL, followed by work at the Michigan State University Highway and Traffic Safety Center. In 1964 he became director of the Michigan State Insurance Institute, which he led for 26 years.
He retired in 1990, moving with his wife, Betty, to Seneca, SC. They returned to Michigan in 2019 to be closer to family.
He will be dearly missed by Betty; his sister, Mary (Bill) Longley; his children, Ken (Linda) Aschom, Gail (Stan) Hicks and Jan (Ciney) Rich; his stepdaughter, Liz (Mark) Thompson; a crew of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren and others who were blessed to know him. John 3:16.
