James Schlitter

James Roger Schlitter, 84, of Waukon passed away May 16, 2025, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. A funeral service was held Thursday, May 22 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona, with Deacon Patrick Malanaphy officiating the service. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

James, known as Jim, was born October 10, 1940, at home in Linton Township in rural Allamakee County, Iowa to Lester and DeLillia (Bollman) Schlitter. He attended country school #6 in Linton Township through the sixth grade, completed eighth grade, and graduated from Waterville High School.

Jim spent many years hauling milk for the Volney Cheese Factory before opening his own antique shop, called Jim’s Antiques, in Postville. Later, he became an over-the-road truck driver, owning his own semi and trailer, and continued that work until his retirement.

Jim enjoyed playing cards and bingo in his early years and had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He especially liked hunting squirrels and deer and going fishing.

He is survived by his daughter, Tori (Ray) Gress; two stepdaughters, Tammy (Paul) White and Terri (Beau) Bennett; his grandchildren, Heather Schissel and Alicia (Matt) Cahoon; his step-grandchildren, Melita (Tyler) Andreae, Benjamin White, Savannah White, Brianna (Jon) Kansier, and Brandon Lough; his great-grandchildren, Quebella, Huxley, Mabel, and Knox Cahoon; his step-great-grandchildren, Bray and Beckett Andreae, and Willow Kansier; a sister, Ruth (Earl) Jones; a sister-in-law, Alice Schlitter; and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his longtime partner, Linda Ambrose; his son-in-law, Brad Bissell; one grandson; one nephew, Steve Schlitter; two brothers, Arno and Leo Schlitter; a sister, Violet Long; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Schlitter and Jo Schlitter.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona is assisting the family with arrangements.
