“Music In The Park” to begin May 29 and continue through August at new amphitheater ...

Fueled by a generous donation, the Waukon Park & Recreation Department built the amphitheater pictured above overlooking the pond in the Waukon City Park. Waukon Park and Recreation will be hosting “Music In The Park” at the amphitheater site each Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day, beginning Wednesday, May 29. Those attending are invited to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs, or use the tiered seating walls pictured above. Local musical talent will be on display throughout the free series, according to the following schedule:

Waukon City Council gives approval to begin search for new City Manager

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, May 20 to address a full agenda of items including the search for a new City Manager, the proclamation of May 24 and May 25, 2019 as American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Days and discussion of consultation fees for former City employees.

The Public Hearing for the proposed disposition of interest in real property by the City of Waukon was opened with City Clerk Lana Snitker indicating that no written or verbal comments have been received. This hearing is related to the sale of the Monona clinic property to Medical Associates/Mercy Family Care Network, LLC for the sum of $125,500.00. The Public Hearing was closed.

The council moved into Public Comment with Dan Denk of Waukon discussing requirements for a cul de sac near a property he is planning to purchase. Joe Cunningham of Waukon discussed several matters relating to sidewalks, streets and tree removal.

World renown historian and author to present “The Enemies Within” Memorial Day in Waukon

Memorial Day, Monday May 27 from 3-5:30 p.m. at the Town Theater & Pizza Pub (formerly Main Feature Theater & Pizza Pub) in Waukon world renown historian and author Dr. Michael Luick-Thrams will give two presentations entitled “The Enemies Within: Midwest and German POWs in Each Other’s Homes, 1943-48.” Local Veterans and Prisoners of War (POWs) will be honored in between sessions in celebration of Memorial Day.

The event is free and open to everyone. Dr Luick-Thrams will also have copies of his books available for purchase and signing. The event is being co-sponsored by the Robey Memorial Library Foundation Board and the Allamakee County Historical Preservation Society.

Supervisors discuss creation of an official County Seal now required on election ballots, possible change in location of June 3 board meeting

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, May 13 to address a full agenda of items including discussion relating to the official County Seal, consideration of a temporary part-time Secondary Roads employee and setting the last meeting date of Fiscal-Year 2019 for paying claims.

There were no members of the public in attendance and no Public Comment. The Quarterly Report for Veterans Affairs was accepted and placed on file.

Allamakee County Sheriff Clark Mellick discussed the next agenda item involving the consideration of using the County credit card for an online purchase of floor mats for a Sheriff’s Department vehicle. Mellick discussed the request to purchase floor mats for a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado at $34.45 with the Supervisors approving the purchase using the County credit card.

Volunteers plant more than 50 trees in Waukon City Park ...

Volunteers joined forces Saturday, May 4 for a day of tree planting in the Waukon City Park. A total of 51 trees were planted and mulched. This past winter, 52 trees were removed from the City Park that were either dead or that were ash trees in danger of infestation by the Emerald Ash Borer. May is Community Action Month: Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) celebrating 54 years in Allamakee County

The month of May is “Community Action Month” and Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) has been serving the residents of northeast Iowa for 54 years. NEICAC is a part of the National Community Action Network - over 1,000 community action agencies serving the entire United States.

In Iowa, there are 17 community action agencies, serving all 99 counties. NEICAC serves Allamakee, Bremer, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties.

Dan Byrnes, Marcia Hesse and Jenny Cole represent Allamakee County on NEICAC’s Board of Directors.  Additionally, Byrnes is the Board Secretary/Treasurer and the Chair of the Finance Committee. Hesse and Cole both serve on the Public Relations/Media Committee.

Annual “Keep Waukon Beautiful Day” clean-up scheduled for May 18

The annual “Keep Waukon Beautiful Day” has been scheduled for Saturday, May 18 in the Waukon area, and volunteers can mark their calendars to help take part in the event in an effort to clean up and maintain the appearance of the community. Interested participants are asked to meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18 at the front entrance of Waukon City Park.

Those participating are asked to bring with them garbage bags and work gloves. Those unable to attend are encouraged to take a little time that weekend do something positive for the environment, such as picking up trash or helping a neighbor with yard work, to show how they value the planet.

Bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf visits Robey Memorial Library ...

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon hosted author Heather Gudenkauf Monday, April 29 for an Author Event. Gudenkauf is the Edgar Award nominated, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of “The Weight of Silence”, “These Things Hidden” and “Not A Sound”. Her new book, “Before She Was Found,” features a chilling crime set in Iowa.

There were 25 people in attendance for Gudenkauf’s presentation. She talked about the process of becoming a published author, where she gets ideas for her writing, and how reading influenced her life growing up with unilateral hearing loss. She also signed books for many of those in attendance.

Waukon City Council approves third and final reading of ordinance increasing wastewater utility service charges, discusses tennis court project funding needs and library roof

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, May 6 to address a full agenda of items including the Third and Final Reading of the Wastewater Utility Service Charge Increase, discussion of Robey Memorial Library roof issues and tennis court project funding.

After the meeting was called to order, two public hearings were individually held. The first was for Budget Amendment #1 for Fiscal-Year-Ending (FYE) June 30, 2019 and the other for the designation of an expanded revitalization “area” and the adoption of an amended plan for such area. City Clerk Lana Snitker indicated that no written or verbal comment was received for either public hearing and there was no comment from the public in attendance. Both hearings were then closed.

Supervisors take no further action on amendment to Zoning Ordinance regarding towers within Bluffland Protection District

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, April 29 to address a full agenda of items including the First Reading of Amendment #3 to Zoning Ordinance L, consideration of a letter requesting NRCS professional expertise for the English Bench Watershed #9 and the discussion of nuisance properties and remedies and actions.

During Public Comment, Chairperson Larry Schellhammer discussed a recent conversation where he was informed that the U.S. Flag in front of the County Courthouse may be showing some wear and may be in need of replacement. Supervisor Dennis Koenig left the board room briefly to inspect the flag and upon his return indicated that due to the recent rainfall, it is difficult to see any damage or wear. The Supervisors agreed to examine the condition of the flag when it dries out and precipitation is not an issue.
