NICC Waukon Center will be offering Certified Nurse Aide Course January 30

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering the Certified Nurse Aide Course beginning Tuesday, January 30 from 4-7 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center, located at 1220 Third Avenue NW in Waukon.

This State of Iowa-approved class is the first step toward a career helping others in healthcare settings. It prepares students for employment as a nurse aide (CNA) and may be a prerequisite for admission into the College’s nursing programs. The fast-paced combination of classroom, hands-on laboratory and off-site clinical experience addresses basic nursing and personal care skills, patient rights and communication. Special attention to mental, physical and social health of geriatric and special populations is included.

Seed Treatment Course to be offered February 28

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Office Allamakee County will host a Seed Treatment Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators, Wednesday, February 28. The program will be shown at locations across Iowa through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP).

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the course runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The registration fee is discounted before February 21. To register or to obtain additional information about the CIC, contact the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Allamakee County by phoning 563-568-6345.

The course will provide continuing instruction credit for commercial pesticide applicators certified in categories 4 and 10. Topics to be covered include equipment calibration and safe application techniques; pests, pest management and pesticides; and issues concerning treated seed, including disposal of unused treated seed.

ISU Extension and Outreach to offer Certified Handlers Program

Allamakee County will offer the Certified Handlers Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) Wednesday, March 21. The program will be shown across Iowa through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP).

The local attendance site is the Allamakee County Extension Office. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the course will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. The registration fee is discounted before March 14. To register or obtain additional information about the CIC, contact the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Allamakee County by phoning 563-568-6345.

The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Directors has held a series of special and regular sessions within the past week or so, addressing a variety of matters. Coverage of all sessions appears below.

DECEMBER 28 WORK
The ACSD Board met for a work session Thursday morning, December 28 for a conference call with Grundmeyer Leadership Search to discuss the district's superintendent search. The board also met briefly with Waterville Mayor Dave Monserud regarding preservation of Waterville School memorabilia.

EACSD Board of Directors hears presentation on TAG program, approves purchase of rooftop heating unit

The regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) was held at Kee High School in Lansing Monday, January 15. The meeting was called to order by Heather Schulte, Board President. Board members Melanie Mauss, Bruce Palmborg and Heather Schulte were present and members Kelli  Mudderman and Bobbi Goetzinger were absent. Superintendent Dr. Dale Crozier, Kee High School and Middle School Principal Mary Hogan, New Albin Elementary School Principal Chad Steckel and Board Secretary Marian Verdon were also present.

Kee High School to host UIC Speech Contest for first time ever this Saturday ...

For the first time in its history, Kee High School will have the privilege of hosting the Upper Iowa Conference Speech Contest this Saturday, January 13 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Ten Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) schools, including MFL/MarMac, Clayton Ridge, South Winneshiek, Postville, Starmont, North Fayette Valley, West Central, Turkey Valley, Central Elkader and Kee, will attend and bring their large group speech teams to perform for a critic judge where ratings will be given based on how well the teams performed. This contest is designed to prepare these conference schools for the District Contest being held this year at MFL/MarMac High School in Monona January 20.

Allamakee County 4-H'ers participate in Visual Arts workshop ...

Ten Allamakee County 4-H’ers participated in a Visual Arts Workshop Thursday, December 28. The youth spent the morning learning about goal setting, design elements and art principles, and concluded the morning by painting wood pallets. Allamakee County Conservation Foundation to offer scholarships to area high school seniors

The Allamakee County Conservation Foundation (ACCF) is offering a scholarship opportunity for graduating seniors from an Allamakee County high school who will be attending a college or university pursuing a degree in natural resources or a related field. One $500 scholarship will be offered to a senior from each of the school districts - Postville, Allamakee and Eastern Allamakee - in Allamakee County.

Students who would like to apply for the scholarship are encouraged to visit www.allamakeecountyconservation.org or the Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center in Lansing for an application. Applications will be accepted until April 1 of this year and recipients will be notified by May 1.

Brian Dougherty named Nuffield International Farming Scholar

The Nuffield International Farming Scholars program has announced the selection of its 2018 Nuffield Scholars, which includes two agriculturalists from the United States of America and two from Brazil. Among those Scholars is Waukon area native Brian Dougherty, a 1991 graduate of Waukon High School and the son of John and Rita Dougherty of Waukon.

Dougherty is joined in the honor by Steven Griffin of Washington, NC, the assistant manager for Griffin AG LLC, a farming operation that grows corn, wheat and soybeans for storage and marketing, along with other value-added crop. Also joining those two American selections are two Brazilians, Artur Falcette of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mauro Nakata of Sorocaba, Sao Paulo.
