The goal of public health is helping to create an environment where people can live in good health.  Public health helps make good health happen in Iowa’s homes, neighborhoods, schools and workplace.
Public health is more than just state and local government agencies. The public health community works together to fight disease and promote healthy lifestyles through the use of nutrition education, physical activity, immunization clinics, disease surveillance  and home nursing and home care aide visits.

“Welcome to Medicare” is a free, two-hour seminar offered by the Veterans Memorial Hospital Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors. This program will be held Tuesday, April 12 from 5-7 p.m. in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.
“We’re excited to offer this free seminar to the community,” says Russ Hagen, SHIIP volunteer. “Medicare is such an important program, and understanding what it offers helps assure that anyone eligible gets the health benefits they deserve.”
“Welcome to Medicare” will cover Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, the prescription drug benefit (Part D), Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare supplement insurance.

Veterans Memorial Hospital has announced they will again be awarding prizes to all those in Allamakee and northern Clayton counties that participated in the Live Healthy Iowa 10 week wellness challenge in 2016.  That challenge has recently come to an end for this year.  Prizes for all participants will be awarded during the hospital’s annual Family Wellness Fair which will be held on Wednesday, May 11, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the hospital.
Veterans Memorial Hospital supports and encourages the Live Healthy Iowa state-wide wellness program for all individuals in this area for wellness motivation and support.   This web-based program offers all participants a personal tracking page that allows everyone to keep their own results right in front of them at all times.  It also gives professional support including weekly motivational emails and unlimited access to recipes, workouts and other health information, all easily accessible on the Live Healthy Iowa website.

Cody and Jill Mathis of New Albin announce the birth of their son, Levi Wayne Mathis, born March 21, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 8 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins siblings Layla (5) and Collin (1).
Grandparents are Wayne and Jane Meyer of New Albin, Sheri Honn of Lansing and Rick Mathis of Harpers Ferry. Great-grandparents are Viv Andregg of Waukon, Merle Honn of Waukon, Georgie Gavin of Lansing, and Joan Meyer of Lansing.

Marissa Martins of Waukon announces the birth of her daughter, Brielle Rae Martins, born March 20, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 5 lbs. 13 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of her birth.
Grandparents are Mark Martins of Waukon, Cheryl Triggs of Waukon, Dennis Carlo of Waterloo and Jennifer Thill of Waterloo. Great-grandparents are Gladys Triggs of Waukon, JoAnn Martins of Postville, and Virginia and Leonard Thill of Waterloo.

Laura Colsch and James Lightfoot of Waukon announce the birth of their daughter, Ellianna James Lightfoot, born March 23, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 6 lbs. 2 ozs. and measured 18-1/2 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins a brother, Landon Kevin Lightfoot.
Grandparents are Kristie and Troy Hagensick of Waukon, Kevin Lightfoot of Dubuque, Nicholas Colsch of West Union and Jeannette Marmo of Manchester. Great-grandparents are Carol and Gary Scheffert of Dubuque and Kathy Byrnes.

Tina Peterson and Jesse Blake of Waukon announce the birth of their son, Jameson Michael Blake, born March 3, 2016 at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. He weighed 8 lbs. 6 ozs. and measured 21 inches in length at the time of his birth.
Grandparents are Mike and Audrea Peterson of Waukon, Mike Blake of Dorchester and Linda Blake of Decorah.

Chelsea Anne Regan and Nathan Jacob Schon of Waukon announce the birth of their son, Liam Mason Schon, March 6, 2016 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 4 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at his birth.
