Veterans Memorial Hospital’s “Get Your Walk On in Waukon” route remains available to public for walking or running anytime

“Stop the Bleed Training” offered during VMH Walk/Run ... The Healthiest State Initiative strongly encourages everyone to walk at least 30 minutes per day. The hospital would like to invite the public to still follow the Corn Days family fun 1.5-mile and the 5K (3.1-mile) route anytime over the next few weeks. Just stop by the front entrance of the hospital to pick up a route map and event goodie bag. Then follow the bright blue painted arrows on the streets marking these routes around town. This year at the hospital’s annual event, blood sugar diabetes tests and massages were offered in addition to the Stop the Bleed training, pictured above. The Veterans Memorial Hospital Family Fun Walk/Run is offered each year in conjunction with the annual Waukon Corn Days celebration. Submitted photo.

The route from the annual “Get Your Walk On in Waukon” family fun walk and run held Saturday, August 17 in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration is still marked and available for anyone to follow at any time.

The Healthiest State Initiative strongly encourages everyone to walk at least 30 minutes per day. That is the reason the hospital offered a 1.5-mile walk and the optional 5K (3.1-mile) again this year. The hospital would like to invite the public to continue to enjoy the event routes anytime. Maps of the 1.5-mile and 5K (3.1-mile) routes, as well as event goodie bags, are available to be picked up at the main entrance of the hospital.

In addition, bright blue painted arrows on the streets throughout Waukon outline the 1.5-mile course that ends at the east side of the hospital or they can choose to continue on to complete the 3.1-mile course that ends at the south side of the hospital.

Caregiver Support Group to meet at VMH

The next Caregiver Support Group meeting will be held Monday, September 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the Meditation Room in the front entrance of Veterans Memorial Hospital.  When a person is diagnosed with a chronic illness, a lot of focus and attention is put on how to keep that person as independent and as healthy as possible.

When a person loses some of their abilities to care for themselves the burden of care is often assumed by the spouse, a child (or children), or sometimes friends and neighbors. While everyone who becomes a caregiver handles the added responsibility with different skill sets, attitudes and understanding levels, there is no question that there is a very real strain associated with care giving.

Blood Donor Day set

How many know that one in seven people entering the hospital will need blood?

Attend the next LifeServe Blood Center Blood Drive held Thursday, September 5 from 12-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. Blood drives are held once per month in Waukon. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with its blood and blood products.

The LifeServe Blood Center is seeking donors to ensure a safe and plentiful blood supply in Iowa. Because there is no substitute for human blood, the need for donors is continuous.

Over half of the United States population is eligible to donate blood, yet less than four percent donate on a regular basis. A single donation of blood can be used to save up to three lives and help in treatment of cancer patients, accident victims, hemophiliacs and surgery patients.  The LifeServe Blood Center is committed to serving the needs of Iowans by saving lives through volunteer blood donation.
