Waukon volleyball falls to Crestwood and in three matches at Don Bosco Tournament

The Waukon volleyball team played through a winless week of competition, remaining in search of its first win in Northeast Iowa Conference play. This week’s opportunity at that first league win fell short at home against Crestwood Tuesday, October 3 by scores of 16-25, 21-25 and 7-25 before the volleyball Tribe then missed out on any match victories at all for the week with three more losses at the Don Bosco Tournament Saturday, October 7.

Waukon girls cross country team claims fifth place in strong field at South Winn

Sophomore Katelyn Benzing breaks 21:00 mark to set new school record for 5K race

In a field featuring four teams ranked within the top five of their respective classes, the Class 2A 12th-rated Waukon girls cross country team ran to a fifth-place finish out of six scoring teams at the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 3. Finishing behind Class 3A third-rated Decorah, Class 1A top-rated Kee and Central Elkader and South Winneshiek teams ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, in Class 1A, the Lady Indians tallied 111 team points.

“The girls had another successful run at South Winn,” Waukon girls cross country coach Brett Egan said. “We faced some very strong teams in northeast Iowa with five ranked teams in the meet.”

The Kee volleyball team had just one competition on its schedule this past week, hosting a successful Upper Iowa Conference dual with MFL/MarMac Tuesday, September 26. That dual got off to somewhat of a rollercoaster start with the Hawks soaring to a 25-9 first-set victory but then falling to the visiting Bulldogs by an 18-25 result in set two. Kee then took control of the match with a sweep of the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-16, to claim the match.

Waukon volleyball team battles through tough week with NEIC losses to top-15 rated foes, more rated competition at Columbus Tournament

The Waukon volleyball team played through not only its busiest week of the season but also its most challenging, as three different days of competition featured matches against top-15 ranked teams in their respective classes. A slate such as that didn’t allow for much success in the win column, as the Indians were swept in all but one of the six matches they played this past week, posting a single match win for the week.

Waukon girls cross country team claims runner-up finish at Crestwood Invitational

The Waukon girls cross country team ran in a rare Saturday meet this past weekend, traveling to Cresco Saturday, September 30 for the Crestwood Invitational. Rated seventh in Class 2A’s team standings, the Lady Indians posted runner-up finishes in each of three competitions at the meet, tallying 55 team points to finish behind Class 2A second-rated Crestwood’s championship total of 26 points.

The Indians were scheduled to next compete at the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 3 near Calmar. Waukon’s cross country teams will then prepare to host this year’s Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Meet Tuesday, October 10 at the Waukon Golf and Country Club, with the other six NEIC teams, Charles City, Crestwood, Decorah, New Hampton, Oelwein and Waverly-Shell Rock, all coming to town and the event beginning at 4 p.m. with middle school competition, followed by junior varsity girls and boys, and then varsity girls and boys.

Waukon football team posts 51-27 road victory at Monticello behind season- and career-high efforts

For the fourth time in its five victories of this 2017 season, the Waukon football team put more than 50 points on the scoreboard, using another strong second quarter to help pull away to an eventual 51-27 victory at Monticello Friday, September 29 in Class 2A District 4 play. That offensive display, however, was provided by a somewhat different combination of the Indians’ arsenal, as the grid Tribe racked up a season-high total of 567 yards in the contest.

The Waukon girls cross country team played host to seven other teams for the annual Waukon Invitational Tuesday, September 19, finishing in fifth place in the eight-team field. Fueled by a pair of top-20 individual finishes, the Lady Indians tallied 121 points to garner that team finish in the middle of the pack.

The Indians were scheduled to next compete Saturday, September 30 at Cresco. Waukon will then prepare for the South Winneshiek Invitational to be held Tuesday, October 3 near Calmar.

The Waukon boys cross country team hosted its annual Waukon Invitational Tuesday, September 19, finishing fourth in the nine-team field. Behind a pair of top-20 individual finishes, the Indians tallied 109 team points. Class 3A third-rated Decorah ran to a nearly perfect team score of just 18 points, claiming five of the meet’s top six individual finishes.

The Indians were scheduled to next compete Saturday, September 30 at Cresco. Waukon will then prepare for the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 3 near Calmar.

Kee volleyball team wins home double-dual, falls at fourth-rated Starmont

The Kee volleyball team won two of its three matches this week, falling at Upper Iowa Conference-leading and Class 1A fourth-rated Starmont Thursday, September 21 by scores of 11-25, 8-25 and 9-25 to wrap up the week. Prior to that loss, the Lady Hawks won a pair of matches at home Tuesday, September 19, sweeping De Soto, WI, 25-8 and 25-12, and also defeating Seneca, WI, 16-25, 25-21 and 15-13.

Holding a 9-9 match record so far this season, including a 3-2 start to their Upper Iowa Conference campaign, the volleyball Hawks are next scheduled to host MFL/MarMac Tuesday, September 26 and will then have more than a week to prepare for a Thursday, October 5 match at Postville.
