The 2015 Kee football team will look to benefit from the return of half a dozen varsity letterwinners coming back from a team that posted a 6-3 record last season and qualified for the Eight-Player State Play-Offs for the sixth consecutive season. Those six veterans will shoulder a heavy load, however, as last season’s squad graduated eight seniors, many of whom were multi-year starters and letterwinners.
Those half dozen returning letterwinners include a trio of seniors in Logan Flack, Jed McLimans and Ethan Walleser. Juniors Clay Olson and Casey Carroll also bring back a great deal of varsity experience from their young high school football careers, while sophomore Brock Flack wraps up this season’s list of seasoned returnees for the Hawks out of 23 total players on this season’s Kee roster.

The 2015 Kee volleyball team has a lot to look forward to this fall; a lot of height, a lot of returning varsity experience, and a lot of hope for a successful fall campaign. A whopping total of 10 varsity letterwinners return for the volleyball Hawks, including every one of their statistical leaders from last season from a squad that finished with a 12-17 overall record and a 5-4 mark that placed Kee in the middle of the final Upper Iowa Conference standings.
“I believe our biggest strength will be the fact we have so many returning letterwinners and experience,” Kee volleyball coach Rich Ellis said. “Last season we had three freshmen in the line-up, and those girls have a year of varsity volleyball under their belt now. Combine that with our returning seniors and it should lead to a successful season. We will be counting on our seniors to really supply the leadership we are going to need to be successful.”

Waukon football team returns 16 letterwinners in quest for return to play-offs

The misfortune of the 2014 Waukon football season could very well play into a strong advantage for the 2015 Indian grid campaign, as season-ending injuries suffered by a small handful of team-leading seniors early last fall opened the door for several underclassmen to gain experience that will be most beneficial for the football Tribe this season. A total of 16 varsity letterwinners return for the Indians, with half of those veterans playing a majority of snaps on both sides of the football last season during the Tribe’s 3-6 overall campaign that was just a handful of plays away from a third consecutive State Play-Off berth.

Waukon volleyball team led by letterwinning trio, large senior class in 2015

The Waukon volleyball team will return just three varsity letterwinners from last season, graduating nine seniors from a squad that posted a 16-22 record last season. Although that senior class was one of the largest in recent memory, third-year Waukon volleyball head coach Peyton Lapel will be welcoming an even larger group of upperclassmen this year, as 11 seniors have reported for early-season practice thus far.

Kee baseball team battles through 11-22 season under first-year head coach

The Kee baseball team played to an 11-22 season record under first-year head coach Jim Mauss. Compounding the fact that the first-year head coach was facing back-to-back seasons where the Hawks had graduated two-thirds of their starting line-up was the unfortunate reality of injury that took two more of last season’s young starters out of the mix for this entire season.
Still, Coach Mauss is not one to look for excuses and expects better results from himself and his charges. “This season was very tough on me, but I understand what I need to improve on and what the guys need to improve on,” Coach Mauss said. “No one feels bad that Kee is finally down, so we need to put in lots of hours and improve before the beginning of May 2016.”

Waukon baseball team plays to 12-17 season with senior-laden team

The Waukon baseball team played its way to the most wins in a single regular season since the summer of 2011, compiling an overall record of 12-17. But with a majority of this season’s losses coming during a 4-14 Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) campaign, the Indians still found themselves looking up at the remaining six teams in the final NEIC standings.
“Our challenge will always be the competitiveness of our schedule and league,” Waukon baseball coach Jerry Keenan said. “It is a solid league from top to bottom and we are facing a good opponent every time we take the field. But facing competition like that will make us better and we will continue to work hard and be a challenge for them as well.”

Waukon softball team battles through 7-19 campaign under new head coach

The Waukon softball team played to a season record of 7-19 during its 2015 campaign, coming within a handful of runs of playing to an overall even record for the season, as half a dozen of the Indians’ losses came by three runs or fewer. More than half of this season’s losses featured one decisive inning in which the softball Tribe allowed enough runs to turn an otherwise competitive contest into a loss or one by a more decisive margin, proving the Indians were competitive more often than not, no matter who the opponent.

Waukon baseball team has season ended by fourth-rated West Delaware

Waukon senior first baseman Brock Waters latches on to this fly ball as a West Delaware baserunner tries to get back to first base and some of Waters’ fellow senior teammates, (left to right in photo background above) pitcher Sully Bucheit, left fielder Marshall Lyons and shortstop Jake Ronan, look on. After making the catch, Waters was able to tag out the baserunner before he got back to the base for a double play in the first inning of the Indians’ 14-0 loss at the home of the fourth-rated Hawks in the opening round of Class 3A district tournament play Friday, July 17. The four Indians pictured above joined fellow seniors Adam Benzing, Landon Sivesind and Michael Howe in wrapping up their high school careers with the postseason tournament loss. The Waukon baseball team had its 2015 season brought to a close in a Class 3A first-round district tournament loss at the home of fourth-rated West Delaware Friday, July 17. The loss brings the Tribe’s 2015 season to a close with a 12-17 overall record that includes a mark of 4-14 to place the Indians seventh in the final Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) standings. West Delaware went on to defeat Independence - 14-11 first-round winners over Decorah - by a 2-1 final result in the Monday, July 20 district championship game to earn a Wednesday, July 22 Substate 3 championship game match-up with second-rated Waverly-Shell Rock, 4-2 winners over Charles City in Monday, July 20 district championship play. That substate winner will advance on to next week’s Class 3A State Tournament.

Kee baseball team has season brought to an end with district loss to Wapsie Valley

Kee baseball senior outfielder/pitcher Nolan Welsh closed out the Hawks’ effort on the mound in their 10-2 first-round Class 1A district tournament loss to Wapsie Valley at Jesup Tuesday, July 14. Welsh threw the game’s final inning and one-third, giving up just two hits while striking out one batter and walking another. He started the game in right field, chasing down a couple fly balls for outs in his final game in a Kee baseball uniform. The Kee baseball team had its 2015 season brought to a close in the opening round of Class 1A district tournament play Tuesday, July 14, suffering a 10-2 loss to Wapsie Valley in the first half of a district tournament doubleheader played that evening in Jesup. The Hawks had just faced their Warrior opponents one week earlier, pulling out an 11-10 road victory, but could not come up with a similar offensive response and allowed a seven-run fifth inning to open up a 2-2 scoreboard knot enroute to the loss. The loss ended Kee’s season at an 11-22 overall record that includes a mark of 6-10 that placed the Hawks sixth in the final nine-team Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) standings. With the win, Wapsie Valley advanced on to face Jesup, 6-1 first-round winners over Central City.
