Presbyterian Church selling apple pies

Do you love the aroma of a baked apple pie filling your kitchen with the sweet smell of fruit and pungent spices? Are you in the mood for a mouth-watering slice of warm, gooey homemade apple pie with a dab of creamy vanilla ice cream on top?

But ... you don't want to go to all the trouble of peeling apples and mixing up a pie crust. Maybe your busy schedule doesn't allow you time for baking a homemade apple pie. Or maybe you're just not much of a cook.

It doesn't matter. The Postville Community Presbyterian Church will take care of all those problems for you.

They are selling homemade apple pies for just $7.00 each through October 28. A group of more than 50 volunteers will be doing all the peeling, cutting, dicing, mixing and even crimping the edges of homemade apple pies. All you have to do is pick it up and pop it into the oven. It's so perfect you don't even have to tell anyone you didn't make it from scratch.

Last year 50 volunteers at Community Presbyterian Church made 200 apple pies. This year their goal is 350 homemade apple pies. In true assembly-line fashion, these Betty Crocker stand-ins will be peeling 12 bushels of apples and using 150 pounds of flower, 75 pounds of sugar, not to mention lard, butter, salt and cinnamon, to whip up dozens of delicious pies for sale.

Members of the Pie Committee are Fran Schager, Twila Schroeder, Dona Peck, Lee Marsh, and Roger Engstrom.

They and more than 50 volunteers will be working on October 29 in the basement of the Presbyterian Church from 8 a.m. until the last apple has been peeled, pared, spiced, and nestled into a cozy crust.

Orders will be taken by calling 864-3736 by October 28. Pies are unbaked and can be picked up or delivered on October 29 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
