William Howes

William “Bill” Howes, passed away September 10, 2022 at his home in Brownsville, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 16 at St. Patrick’s Church, Brownsville, MN. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 15 at St Patrick’s Church, Breza Hall, Brownsville, MN. Prayer Service will be at 4 p.m., and visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 10-11 a.m. Friday morning prior to services at the church.

Bill was born August 26, 1939 in Waukon to Raymond and Cecelia (Teeling) Howes. He was married to Jeanette (Jan) Bakewell July 23, 1960.

Earl Haas

After spending his last 17 months in “God’s Waiting Room”, aka Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Earl Francis Haas entered Heaven and was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus September 9, 2022. It was his 87th birthday.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 13 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the ALS Foundation.

Earl Francis Haas was born in the Lycurgus township near Waukon September 9, 1935 to Viola (Knickerbocker) and Leo Haas. He and his seven siblings learned to work hard growing up on the family farm. He attended the two-room Lycurgus school and, after taking one year off to work, graduated from Waukon High School in 1955. He left home with $5 in his pocket to start his adult life.

Darrel Koozer

Darrel Dwayne Koozer, age 84, peacefully passed away Sunday, September 4, 2022. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 24 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1704 Green Valley Road, Waukon. Service will begin at 11 a.m. followed by a meal. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1843 Valley Street, Lansing.

Darrel was born January 30, 1938 to Royal and Florence Koozer in Geneva, NE. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955 and served until 1975, becoming a Corpsman. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer.

Darrel married Janet Colene Brooks in 1956 and had five children. After he retired from the Navy, he drove semi trucks for various companies. He enjoyed mechanical work and woodworking, restoring old vehicles and making wood-themed clocks.

Darrel is preceded in death by his parents, Royal and Florence Koozer; two brothers, Alvin and Harold; and his sister, Beverly.

Decorators needed for 31st Annual Christmas Fantasy: This year’s theme is “Making the Future Bright”

The Foundation is excited to return to a normal event this year like the one pictured here, with all of the special events and displays held inside the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion. The theme will be “Making the Future Bright.” Decorators are needed to decorate the numerous trees for display as well as donors needed for the silent auction items such as miniature trees, wall hangings, quilted items, gift baskets, centerpieces and more. The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation has announced the 2022 Christmas Fantasy will be back to a normal event this year, holding it back inside the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon with all of the special events included. This will be the 31st annual Fantasy event the Foundation has hosted.

The theme will be “Making the Future Bright.”  Christmas Fantasy decorators are needed to decorate the numerous trees for display as well as donors needed for the silent auction items such as miniature trees, wall hangings, quilted items, gift baskets, centerpieces and more.

The 2022 event will be held Friday through Monday, November 11-14.  Plans will again return to include the usual Friday night happy hour event, Saturday and Monday luncheons, Saturday night wine, cheese and dessert event and general admission Sunday and Monday afternoons.

Grandparenting Classes again held at VMH

Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon will be offering Grandparenting classes again this fall. Corinne Cook, RN, Babysitting Class instructor, will teach the next Grandparenting Class scheduled for Saturday, October 1 from 9:30 a.m. until Noon. The class will be held in the hospital’s Large Conference Room. Signs will be posted.

In these classes, new or soon-to-be grandparents will learn all the new protocols to use when caring for their new grandchild. Some topics covered will include basic baby care, car seat safety, Tylenol/Ibuprofen dosing charts, home safety, poison control information, infant/child CPR, choking and other emergency medical information, as well as tips to support parents such as handling the baby blues and postpartum depression.  Free-will donations will be accepted to cover the costs of the class.

Healthcare Faces of the Future for 6th-8th grades at Veterans Memorial Hospital September 14

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) have teamed up to provide a day for sixth-eighth graders to explore the many health care careers that are available to them. The event will be held Wednesday, September 14, which is a teacher in-service day with no school. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon.

All attending will be visiting numerous health care departments around the hospital and hearing from staff in those roles. They will share their education, job duties and what a typical day in their work life is, all in an effort to introduce more youth to the career opportunities in health care.

Corinne Cook, RN, will be the class instructor. This class is held free of charge and a lunch will be served. All those attending should enter the hospital through the ICN entrance located at the southeast side of the hospital along the golf course.

Diabetes Support Group to meet at VMH September 15

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, September 15 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital. Masks will be required to be worn.

This diabetes class is open to everyone who has diabetes or who has a friend or loved one with diabetes.  For more information on the Diabetes Support Group, call  Angie Mettille, RN at Veterans Memorial Hospital at 563-568-3411.

Grief Support Group to meet

The local Grief Support Group will be holding its monthly meeting at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon Tuesday, September 13 at 5 p.m. in the Meditation Healing Center, located just inside the main entrance of the hospital. Masks will be required.

This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief.

Feel free to attend and bring a friend and be sure to wear a mask. All attendees will be able to physically distance during the meeting. This grief support group meets the second Tuesday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.

Vernon and Eilene Cooper 60th wedding anniversary


Eilene and Vernon Cooper, then and now

Vernon and Eilene (Moody) Cooper of Lansing are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. The couple married September 22, 1962. They will be celebrating their anniversary with a family dinner.

They have five children, Deb (Dan) Windfield, Wayne (Tammy) Cooper, Vicky (the late Scott) Hill, Ron (Angie) Cooper and Brenda (Scott) Schorr. The couple is blessed with 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
