Lansing City Council approves community-wide “thank you” event at City sports complex for October 9, among other matters

by Julie Berg-Raymond

In its regular meeting held Tuesday, September 7 due to the Labor Day holiday being observed on its usual Monday meeting day, the Lansing City Council approved a request by long-time Lansing dentist Bruce Carlson to hold a community-wide “thank you” event at the City sports complex Saturday, October 9.

According to the Lansing Parks & Recreation Board August 16 meeting minutes, the now retired Dr. Carlson described the event as “a thank you to the community for the support of his dental practice and to introduce the new dentists who have taken on the practice.” He said he would also like to recognize several new businesses in Lansing.

Attendees will be permitted to bring their own beverages into the complex, but there will be no alcohol for sale. No alcohol consumption will be allowed outside the complex, including in the parking lot. Fences from Fish Days will be used to block off the event.

Dredging to begin at Village Creek boat ramp in Lansing

Lansing Village Creek boat channel dredging will begin Wednesday, September 15 and is expected to continue through October 15. The boat ramp will remain open, but space will be limited.

The navigation channel from the boat ramp to the main channel Mississippi River will be dredged hydraulically. Hydraulic dredge materials will be pumped into geo-fabric bags that will remain in place for drying on the northwest corner of the parking area. Once material is sufficiently dried, it will be hauled away at a later date. The channel beyond the railroad and highway bridges will be excavated and removed by barge.

Boaters will still have access to the middle and north ramps. Expect delays while equipment is in the area. The northwest corner of the parking lot will be closed to parking. Boaters are urged to use caution and follow signage to avoid active work zones. Work will occur Mondays through Saturdays.

Waukon football team wraps up non-district schedule with 42-6 road win over fellow NEIC squad Crestwood

The Waukon football team wrapped up its non-district schedule in convincing fashion Friday, September 10 when the grid Tribe traveled to Crestwood to face a third consecutive fellow Northeast Iowa Conference opponent. Facing a Cadet team yet to win a game this season and giving up more than 40 points per game in their first two contests of the season, the grid Indians continued both those trends for the host squad in dealing Crestwood a 42-6 defeat.

“The biggest thing coming out of the non-district schedule is players learning to play together,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said of his team’s continued improvement in non-district play that peaked in this final non-league contest. “We are gaining confidence, and the kids are just starting to see what they are capable of.”

Strong start allows Kee football team to remain undefeated with another big district win, 66-39 at home against Springville

Three tackles for loss include a sack ... Kee football senior lineman Alex Goetzinger bears down on this Springville ballcarrier in the Hawks’ 66-39 home win over the Orioles Friday, September 10. Goetzinger wrapped up Kee’s lone quarterback sack in the contest in sharing the team lead of three tackles for loss with fellow senior Kai Timmerman, Goetzinger recording two solo stops in his total of five tackles for the ballgame and also helping pave the way for 462 rushing yards in Kee’s total of 514 yards of offense. A strong start behind an even stronger running game allowed the Kee football team to break a recent grip the Springville football team has had on the Hawks. Having surrendered six of their past seven match-ups to the Orioles over the past nine seasons, including the past four in a row by no closer than a three-touchdown margin, the football Hawks jumped out to a 34-0 headstart over the Orioles through the first quarter-plus and then played nearly even football on the scoreboard for the game’s remainder to remain undefeated on the season with a 66-39 home victory Friday, September 10.

Despite snapping that four-game skid against a traditionally-strong Springville squad that is winless yet this season, Kee football head coach Chad Winters would still like to see a more focused complete-game effort from his now 3-0 squad. After bolting to their 34-0 early edge, the Hawks were outscored by a 39-32 result over the game’s nearly entire three final quarters.
