WHS Class of 1962 meetings

The Waukon High School Class of 1962 will be meeting at 11 a.m. at the Waukon City Club the first Thursday of each month. The location  change for the regularly scheduled meeting is due to the fire at Gus and Tony’s.

Birth announcement: Miller

Brad and Julie Miller of Cascade announce the birth of their son, Ezra Charles Miller, born February 13, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 12 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins siblings, Samantha (18), Olivia (13), Seraphia (12), Cecilia (10), Mariana (8), Clara (7), Teresa (5), Monica (3) and Noah (22 months).

Grandparents are Ron and Donna Miller and Chuck and Patty Delaney, all of Cascade.

Leanna Guyer and Kenny Hougen of Waukon announce the birth of their son, Braxton David Hougen, born February 13, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 ozs. and measured 19 inches in length at the time of his birth. He joins siblings, Kailyn (12), Emily (11), Alexis (5), Victor (8) and Tristan (7).

Grandparents are Julie and David Hougen of Ridgeway and Mike and Linda Lane of Randalia.

Birth announcement: Freilinger

Reggie and Sarah Freilinger of Monona announce the birth of their son, Foster Joseph Freilinger, born February 13, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 8 ozs. and measured 22-1/2 inches in length at the time of his birth.

Grandparents are Brad and Cheryl Freilinger of Monona and David and Mona Schultz of Luana.

Crowned and serving as 2020 Miss Iowa Angus...

Allie Bieber, daughter of Ed and Amy Bieber of Waukon and a junior at Waukon High School, was crowned Miss Iowa Angus for 2020 at the 2019 Iowa State Fair held in August of last year in Des Moines. Although crowned last August, Bieber’s reign as Miss Iowa Angus did not begin until year 2020 and her first event was the National Western Stock Show held in Denver, CO during the month of January, where she is pictured in the submitted photo at right with Miss American Angus Eva Hinrichsen, who represents the entire United States for the American Angus Association.

Slippery When Wet - The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute will headline musical grandstand act at this year’s Allamakee County Fair

Local favorite The Caminos will open Saturday night’s music event

The grandstand at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds will be rockin’ and rollin’ Saturday, July 11 in Waukon, as this year’s grandstand musical act for the Allamakee County Fair will feature some new flair and some local air.

The Allamakee County Fair Board has announced that it will be bringing the next best thing to legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bon Jovi to the fair this year when Slippery When Wet - The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute hits the stage to headline this year’s musical entertainment for the fair. This four-man group is led by frontman Jason Morey on vocals, Adin Stickle on guitar, Jimmi Botsford on bass and John Martin on drums.

Supervisors hear concerns from residents, receive updates from department heads

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, February 24 to address a variety of agenda items including the Public Hearing for the County Fiscal-Year 2021 Maximum Levy/Tax Dollars, consideration of bridge and culvert plans and the purchase of a pavement pothole patching trailer.

Deadlines for filing nomination papers begin as early as next week for some elected county positions

With this 2020 election year, the State of Iowa has moved up the deadline for filing nomination papers for certain county level elected positions that would appear on election ballots for this year’s June primary and/or November general elections. Allamakee County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Denise Beyer advises that many of the filing deadlines that once were set in August for non-partisan elected positions have now been moved several months earlier to March.

Winter Stories: An exploration of Effigy Mounds National Monument through film and story being held through March

Effigy Mounds National Monument announces a series of special events celebrating the American Indian tradition of storytelling in winter. Winter Stories will occur Saturday and Sunday afternoons through the end of March. Activities will take place in the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center located at 151 Highway 76, Harpers Ferry.

Presentations span multiple genres of storytelling including traditional storytelling, cinematography and art. This weekend’s presentation is scheduled for Saturday, February 29 from 1-3 p.m. and will feature Bill Quakenbush, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin speaking on “Ho-Chunk Oral Stories: Are They Still Relevant Today?”

Robey Memorial Library’s next ISBA People’s Law School to feature basics of employment law March 10

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon is hosting the ISBA People’s Law School series through April 21. The library is partnering with the Iowa State Bar Association (ISBA) to bring free high-quality adult programming to the local community.

Tuesday, March 10 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the ISBA will live-stream a free educational event focused on employment law basics to Robey Memorial Library. Topics for this ISBA People’s Law School session include:

• An overview of the employment relationship
• Trends in policies and best practices
• Resources for employees.

Kay Oskvig, an attorney with Whitfield & Eddy Law, will be presenting the information. She represents businesses, governmental entities, nonprofit organizations and independent contractors on issues including non-competition covenants, wage and hour matters, and civil rights complaints.
