Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $30 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $10 (additonal photos are also $10). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 20") will also incur an additional charge of $9/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 20-inch column length. James Teaser

James Raymond Teaser, age 85, passed away at his home in McGregor December 2, 2017 after a short illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 16 at St. Mary Catholic Church, McGregor with Rev. Nils de Jesus Hernandez as the Celebrant. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 15 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, McGregor. There will also be a one hour visitation before Mass at the church Saturday.

Jim was born in southwestern Minnesota November 16, 1932 at Hunt Hospital in Fairmont, MN, the youngest child of Henry Raymond and Mary Lillian Hines Teaser. He grew up on the family farm that was homesteaded by his great-great-grandfather, Irish immigrant James Murphy.

Christine Hammel

Christine (Chrissy) Marie Hammel, age 48, of Lansing passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Gundersen Clinic in La Crosse, WI surrounded by family. A family graveside service will be held at Gethsemane Cemetery, Lansing before a “Celebration of Life” Saturday, December 16. We will celebrate this amazing woman Saturday, December 16 at the Driftless Center, 1944 Columbus Road, Lansing, from 4-7 p.m.

May 2, 1969, a baby girl was born to Donald and Linda (Halverson) Hammel. The doctors said she wouldn’t live but a few days. She defied them. And when she was a sweet little girl, the doctors said she wouldn’t live to see adulthood. She laughed at them. And she grew to be a strong, smart, witty woman who loved her family more than anything.

Helen Wagner

Helen L. Wagner, 91, of Waukon died Friday, December 8, 2017 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 13 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 12 at Martin Funeral Home.

Helen Louise Wagner was born May 1, 1926 on her parents’ farm in rural McGregor, the daughter of Frank and Lillian (Cords) Dahlstrom. She attended rural schools and graduated from McGregor High School.

March 22, 1947, Helen married Urban Leander Wagner in Waterloo; years later they divorced. They lived in both Waterloo and Elkader for a short time before settling in Waukon. Helen worked various jobs, including waitressing at Leiran’s restaurant (now the Waukon Inn). In her younger years, she loved dancing with Urban and liked dressing up for Halloween. Helen also enjoyed reading, sewing and cooking.

Tanner Walker

Tanner Patrick Walker, 21, of Luana, formerly of Postville, died December 4, 2017 at Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City. Funeral Services were held Saturday, December 9 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville with Rev. Lynn Noel as the Officiant. Burial followed at Postville Cemetery, Postville. Memorials in Tanner's name may be made to Postville Dollars for Scholars.

Tanner was born August 11, 1996 to Patrick and Denise (Bugenhagen) Walker at Mayo Health in La Crosse, WI. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville.

Tanner graduated from Postville High School in 2014 and attended Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, where he was enrolled in the lineman program. After lineman school, Tanner worked for North Central Line Setters in Alta. He was currently at Missouri Valley Apprenticeship, working for MJ Electric since June of 2017.

Alf Odegaard

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 7 at Atonement Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, MN for Alf Thorson Odegaard, age 101, of St. Cloud, MN, who passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at home with his family by his side. Rev. John Gabrielson officiated and interment was at Old East Paint Creek Church, Waterville Friday, December 8. Arrangements were entrusted to Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.

Alf Thorson Odegaard was born June 12, 1916 on the family farm in Center Township, Allamakee County, Waterville. He was the third of three children born to Otto Albert (Hanson) Odegard and Barbara Oline Thorson Odegard. He attended rural school located at the corner of his home farm. He graduated from Waterville Consolidated High School as salutatorian in 1932 at the age of 15. He had scholarship offers to Luther and St. Olaf, but because of his young age and lack of money during the Depression, he stayed home and worked on the farm with this father.

Carroll Beall

Carroll R. Beall, 73, of Waukon died Sunday, November 26, 2017 at St. Vincent's East Hospital in Birmingham, AL. Funeral services were held Sunday, December 3 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Pastor Kim Gates officiating. Burial with military honors was at Rossville Cemetery.

Carroll Ray Beall was born December 12, 1943 in St. Paul, MN, the son of Ray E. Beall and Opal Cecelia (Southwell) Hertrampf Beall. When Carroll was a small child, his family moved to the rural Waukon/Dorchester area. Right after graduating from Waukon High School in 1962, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the 2nd Battalion, 44th Artillery until honorably discharged in 1965. He worked with missiles and was stationed in Oklahoma and New Mexico, but was deployed for a while to Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Barbara (Bray) Hastings

Barbara Ruth Hastings (nee Bray), age 85, left this earthly plane Sunday, November 19, 2017. The cause was a massive stroke.

Barbara's final gift was to donate her body to medical school so the physicians-in-training could learn from it. Her family will have a memorial at the time her ashes are returned in 12-18 months.

Barbara was born April 3, 1932 in Des Moines to Chalmer and Ruth Bray. She spent her 85 years positively impacting many lives. She was a great mother to five children, as well as a devoted military wife who moved her family in service to this nation seven times in 20 years. She was a caring friend and a compassionate, skilled Registered Nurse. Barbara was awarded the Meritorious Service Medical twice during her time in government service at the Fort Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital.

Alice Miller

Alice J. Miller, 82, of Waukon, formerly of Dorchester, died Monday, November 27, 2017 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. A prayer service was held Tuesday, December 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Private family burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Iowa River Cemetery in rural Dorchester.

Alice Josephine Miller was born March 19, 1935 in Waukon, the daughter of Henry and Marguerite Gertrude (Blake) Larson. She grew up in the Dorchester and Waukon area, attending Bear Creek and Dutch Hill elementary schools in rural Dorchester and graduating from Waukon High School in 1953.

During high school, Alice worked for the Waukon Greenhouse for her room and board.

Shawn Nagel

Shawn L. Nagel, 46, of Winona, MN, formerly of Waukon, died Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI. A sharing time will be held Monday, December 11 at 5 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial of ashes will be held at a later date in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call one hour before the services at the funeral home Monday.

Shawn Leslie Nagel was born March 25, 1971 in Waukon, the son of Raymond and Cheryl (Johnson) Nagel.  He graduated from Waukon High School in 1990 and attended NICC in Calmar for one year. Shawn worked for Waukon Harley-Davidson as parts manager at their locations in Waukon, La Crosse, WI and Winona, MN. He has been a resident of Winona, MN since 2007. Shawn loved spending time in the outdoors especially fishing, hunting and trapping.

John Scott

John Michael Scott, 67, of McGregor left this life Sunday, November 19, 2017 while on vacation in Omaha, NE. He suffered a heart attack and couldn’t be revived. There will be no services per John’s request.

John started his life in Washington State and joined the Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. He worked for Boeing Aviation the majority of his West Coast life. In the late 1990s he moved to Alaska, where his soon to be good friend connected. He met his friend’s sister, Julie Ball, and they became good friends and were married March 25, 2005. John became a husband, grandpa and great-grandpa all at the same time.  He found the family that he always yearned for and even met his biological father just last year. John could fix almost anything and has left an unfillable hole with his family.
