Mia Kurth commits her running and wrestling talents to Hawkeye Community College ...

Waukon High School senior Mia Kurth signed a letter of commitment to compete for both the women’s cross country team and women’s wrestling team at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, beginning this fall. Kurth says she plans to study Exercise Science and Kinesiology at Hawkeye while competing for the Red Tails, with future plans to possibly complete her wrestling or running eligibility at Wartburg College in Waverly and further her education in pursuit of a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Kee girls track team qualifies six events for State Meet to pace fourth-place finish at Class 1A State Qualifying Meet


State Meet qualification in four events includes return in pair of hurdle races ... Kee girls track and field sophomore Addison Winters leads this line of hurdlers on the way to a sweep of the two individual hurdle events at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet at Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 9. Winters topped this 100 meter hurdle field in a time of 16.08 seconds and also won the 400 meter hurdles in a school record time of 1:08.53 that edged out that event victory by just fifteen-hundredths (.15) of a second. Winters also leaped 16’1.5” to finish second in the long jump and helped Kee’s sprint medley relay to a fourth-place finish in a time of 1:57.05, with both of those performances falling within the next-best 14 non-championship Class 1A performances to earn at-large State Meet qualifications. Waukon boys track team qualifies nine events for State Track and Field Meet to pace sixth-place team finish at Class 2A State Qualifying Meet


Double qualifier returns in 1600 meter run ... Waukon boys track senior Skyler Dugan keeps pace with a pack in the 1600 meter run at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Denver Thursday, May 9. Dugan earned a return trip to the Class 2A State Meet in that distance event with his fifth-place finish in a time of 4:37.12 that was fast enough to earn an at-large qualification for the season grand finale, and he also led off the Tribe’s 4x800 relay for a win in 8:11.90 to help that relay earn an automatic berth among Class 2A’s State Meet elite. Indians qualify for State in all individual running events, as well as 4x800 and 4x400

Competing for the opportunity to extend its season to every high school track and field team’s ultimate destination, the Waukon boys track team battled 11 other schools on that same quest at its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet in Denver Thursday, May 9. The track Tribe’s efforts resulted in a total of nine events earning qualification for this year’s State Track Meet in Des Moines, including six events that earned automatic qualification with top-two placewinnings, with five of those being event wins to headline the Indians’ 64 team points and a sixth-place team finish.

ON TO STATE
The Waukon track and field boys will now compete among their elite colleagues in their nine qualified events at the State Track and Field Meet taking place this Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Waukon girls track team claims five top-two State Meet qualifications, adds another at-large berth to pace fifth-place State Qualifier team finish

Johnson, Hemmersbach each qualify in two individual events, shuttle hurdle and 4x800 also advance

The Waukon girls track and field team initially came away from its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Denver Thursday, May 9 knowing five young ladies in five events were guaranteed an extension of their season to every high school track and field athlete’s desired destination. Those five Indian events featured the required top-two finishes necessary for qualification for this year’s Iowa High School Track and Field Meet in Des Moines taking place later this week, but as the eight at-large event qualifying performances from across the state of Iowa were sorted out, another four young ladies in one other event were added to that season grand finale mix, with all of those State Meet qualifications headlining the Indians’ effort that placed the track Tribe fifth in the final 12-team standings at Denver.

Waukon boys golf team wraps up dual meet schedule with three-stroke win at home, 162-165, over Waverly-Shell Rock


Senior swings in final home meets ... The Waukon boys golf team’s trio of seniors pictured above joined fellow senior Dylan Hogan in each playing in the final home meet of their high school golf careers and helping the Indians sweep Waverly-Shell Rock at every level of play in a Tuesday, April 30 home dual. Left to right, Mason Wasson follows through on the way to joining Hogan in each carding a varsity team second-best total of 41 strokes, Cashton Lloyd tees off en route to the Waukon JV’s second-best total of 44 strokes, and Drew Weymiller sends a putt toward the hole on his way to tallying a round of 49 strokes to complete the varsity effort in the dual. Playing the final home meet of its 2024 season and what would turn out to be its only competition of this past week after a Thursday, May 2 rain-out at North Fayette Valley, the Waukon boys golf team saved its best for last, turning in its best team score of the season to post a 162-165 team victory over Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, April 30. Three of the four Indian scorers in the meet each edged a Go-Hawk opponent by a single stroke to provide that final scoring edge, including sophomore Dylan Stegen carding an event-best 38 strokes for meet medalist honors, just in front of Waverly-Shell Rock sophomore Preston Baumhover and his runner-up medalist tally of 39 strokes.

The Indians were next scheduled to play in their Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament at Decorah Monday, May 6 and then their Class 3A Sectional Tournament Wednesday, May 8 hosted by West Delaware High School in Manchester.

Kee girls track team claims seventh at Ed-Co Invitational, finishes as team runner-up at Upper Iowa Conference Meet

Winters repeats as 100m hurdle UIC champ, Mohn wins 400m UIC crown

The Kee girls track and field team brought its regular season schedule to a close with two final meets this past week prior to beginning its postseason pursuit. The Lady Hawks began this past week with a seventh-place team finish at the Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational Monday, April 29 before claiming its best Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) team finish in recent years with a runner-up finish at this year’s UIC Meet hosted by South Winneshiek in Calmar Thursday, May 2, where sophomore Addison Winters repeated as the 100 meter hurdles UIC Champion and senior Mallory Mohn claimed the UIC crown in the 400 meter dash.

The Kee girls were next scheduled to compete in their Class 1A State Qualifying Meet to be hosted by Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 9.

The Kee boys track and field team brought its regular season schedule to a close this past week, its final competition preparations before pursuit of its postseason possibilities taking place this week. The Hawks claimed a sixth-place team finish at the MFL/MarMac Invitational Monday, April 29 before finishing in seventh place at the annual Upper Iowa Conference Meet hosted by South Winneshiek in Calmar Thursday, May 2.

The Kee boys are next scheduled to compete in their Class 1A State Qualifying Meet to be hosted by Edgewood-Colesburg Thursday, May 9.

Waukon boys track team claims pair of third-place team finishes at New Hampton Invitational and annual Northeast Iowa Conference Meet

Senior Wyatt Gulla wins 400m NEIC crown, helps 4x800 repeat as NEIC Champion

The final week of the regular season for the Waukon boys track and field team saw the Indians claim a pair of third-place finishes this past week as they now prepare for possible postseason extension. The track Tribe opened this past week with a third-place team finish at the New Hampton Invitational Monday, April 29 before doing likewise at the annual Northeast Iowa Conference Meet at Charles City Thursday, May 2, where the Indians claimed a pair of NEIC event championships, one of them by senior Wyatt Gulla in the 400 meter dash and the other being anchored by Gulla, as he joined forces with sophomore Brandon Leppert and fellow seniors Skyler Dugan and Jack O’Neill for repeat NEIC supremacy in the 4x800 relay.

The Indians are next scheduled to compete in their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Denver Thursday, May 9.

Waukon girls track team finishes runner-up at Ed-Co Invitational, sixth at Northeast Iowa Conference Meet

Senior Kloe Hemmersbach wins discus NEIC Championship

The Waukon girls track and field team took part in its final meets prior to the postseason this past week. The Lady Indians brought home a second-place team finish from the large Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational Monday, April 29 before ending up in sixth place at the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Meet hosted by Charles City Thursday, May 2, with senior Kloe Hemmersbach being crowned the NEIC Champion in the discus for the track Tribe’s lone league title collected on the night.

The Lady Indians are next scheduled to compete in their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet to be hosted by Denver Thursday, May 9.

The Waukon girls golf team played in a busy week this past week that would have been even busier if not for the postponement of a Friday, April 26 home date with Charles City and North Fayette Valley to a Monday, April 29 make-up date. The remainder of the Lady Indians’ week included a pair of multiple team competitions and one dual event, with the golf Tribe finishing third behind two larger schools at the Waverly-Shell Rock triangular Monday, April 22 before falling at home to South Winneshiek, 217-252, Tuesday, April 23 and then finishing fourth in an 18-hole tournament at Decorah Saturday, April 27.
