Five-county meeting in regard to REAP program September 22 critical for local outdoor projects

The welfare of local natural and cultural resources is riding on the number of people who attend a September 22 gathering in Monona, according to Iowa Department of Natural Resources Director Richard Leopold.
The meeting, being held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Monona Community Center, concerns the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program. The Monona Community Center is located at 104 Sout Egbert Street, one block east of North Main Street.

Big Pumpkin Contest and much more September 27

The Big Pumpkin Contest, which had its area debut last fall at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon, has been scheduled for September 27 of this year. A new addition to this year's event will be pumpkin decorating and carving contests.
The Big Pumpkin Contest will get its start with weigh-in at 9:30 a.m., with those big pumpkins being on display that day and this year's winners being crowned at a 1 p.m. awards ceremony. In addition to the biggest pumpkin, honors will also be bestowed upon the ugliest pumpkin and the best looking pumpkin.

Allamakee County Tobacco-Free Coalition to meet in Waukon

Is there a safe alternative to smoking? The answer is no. Smoking tobacco, in all forms, is deadly.
Recently, there has been an upsurge of people, in particular college-age students, who believe this alternative can be found in hookahs. Hookahs are water pipes used to smoke a blend of tobacco and exotic fruits. The smoke is filtered through a water pipe which makes inhaling the smoke “smoother”.

Utility vehicle accident Saturday morning claims life of Monona woman

The Allamakee County Sheriff's Office reports a Monona woman suffered fatal injuries in an accident involving a utility terrain vehicle at approximately 12:28 a.m. Saturday, August 29. The report indicates that 43-year-old Cynthia Joanne Petsche of Monona was a passenger on a Polaris Ranger utility vehicle traveling westbound on Linton Drive in southeast Allamakee County when she fell from the vehicle approximately one mile west of the intersection of Linton Drive and Old Sixteen Road.

Sivesinds inducted into 4-H Hall of Fame

Frank and Carol Sivesind of Waukon were inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Sunday, August 23.
