Summertime is the great American season when it comes to fresh vegetables. We start to see more Farmer's Markets in the corners of shopping areas. This last weekend I saw Fresh Sweet Corn in Decorah. Nothing is better than having the first corn on the cob of the season or the first tomato off of the vine.

Schutte to teach in Tanzania

Many young college graduates are willing to go almost anywhere to find that first job and if the job opportunity offers the prospect for adventure, all the better.

Aaron Schutte, 22, son of Sandy Kruse of St. Olaf and Gary Schutte of Castalia, and a May graduate of Wartburg College, found such a job.

Agri, Rubashkins to have two trials

Agriprocessors and former plant manager Sholom Rubashkin will have two federal trials which will delay the start of their state trial, where they face over nine thousand child labor violations. That trial will now not be held until 2010. The first federal trial will be held September 15 and is estimated to last up to five weeks. The second trial, concerning immigration charges, will follow the first. The trial date for the child labor violations will start sometime after January 6, 2010.

Disaster Funds Still Available

Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission in Postville is administering the State and Federal Jumpstart Housing Assistance Program, as well as the Small Business Disaster Recovery program.

The Jumpstart Program has forgivable loans to be used toward home repair (structural, not personal property replacement or remodel) due to damage from the natural disasters of 2008 or homebuyer assistance (if home substantially damaged/destroyed).

Postville summer blood drive

The American Red Cross is sponsoring at Blood Drive in Postville on Monday, July 27 from 2 to 6 p.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church Hall. For an appointment call Emily Heying at 563-864-3646. Walk-ins are also welcome. It is the dog days of summer and many are looking for way to escape the heat. By making an appointment to donate blood through the American Red Cross, you can enjoy cool beverages and great treats while helping other.

A new event is coming to Postville during the holiday season, specifically December 13. "The Holy Walk, a Journey of Love" was proposed to the community by Susan Griffin, who brought the idea from her former church community in Indiana.

Gilbert & Dorothy (Kerr) Livingood celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a gathering of family and friends at the Kelly and Patty Livingood residence in rural Postville on June 26, 2009. The event was hosted by their children, Jean (Marvin) Wilson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Larry (Cindy) Livingood, Waterloo, Leslie (Robert) Livingood, Durbin, South Africa, Francis (Janet) Livingood, Postville, Wayne (Lisa) Livingood, Leawood, Kansas, Beverly (Daryl) Anderson, Clermont, Kelly (Patty) Livingood, Postville. Grandchildren and great grandchildren were also in attendance.
