Kee girls basketball team opens 2014-2015 season with 61-39 win at home over Waukon

The 2014-2015 season got off to a promising start for the Kee girls basketball team, as the Hawks opened the new season with a 61-39 win at home over intra-county foe Waukon Friday, November 21. The Hawks benefited from a strong second half on both ends of the floor, using their overall height advantage to open up a rather close, 25-22 halftime advantage with an 18-6 third quarter outscoring that helped widen the gap to victory.

“We made some defensive adjustments in the second half to try and turn up some pressure and give them a different look,” Kee girls basketball coach Dan Love said about his team’s second half rally. “The girls held them to just three second half field goals.”

The combination of junior post player Mikayla Gavin and freshman guard Ashley Schwartzhoff combined to score just as many points in the ballgame as the visiting Indians, Gavin using her height and reach advantage to rack up a game-high 24 points and Schwartzhoff using a strong fourth quarter to chip in 15 more. While the Hawks rode the efforts of those two throughout the second half, it was a more balanced Kee attack that set the Hawk pace early.
