Waukon girls basketball team opens its 2014-2015 season with 61-39 loss at Kee

The Waukon girls basketball team got its 2014-2015 season underway with a not so happy homecoming debut for first-year head coach and Kee High School graduate Andy Sires. The Indians were outsized and outgunned by the host Hawks in the second half, allowing just a 25-22 halftime deficit to get away to a 61-39 loss in Lansing Friday, November 21.

“Kee is going to be a good team for awhile with all that young talent,” Coach Sires said of the Hawks’ starting line-up that included two freshmen, one sophomore and two juniors. “We just need to keep working on playing defense and finding some offense. Our team will respond.”

The Indians struggled with the overall height advantage Kee held, paced by 6’0”-plus junior Mikayla Gavin. With long arms to match her lanky frame, Gavin swatted 64 blocked shots last season as a sophomore and got her junior year off to a considerable start with 10 more of those against the Indians, forcing the Tribe to just a 23% shooting efficiency while also playing above the Indian defense to rack up a game-high 24 points in addition to grabbing 14 rebounds, just four shy of Waukon’s total boards.
