Horace Magnusson

Horace Kenneth Magnusson, 95, of Lansing, died Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse, WI. He was born  February 22, 1919 to Herman and Mattie (Carlyle) Magnusson in Lansing. Horace graduated from Lansing High School and attended Luther College.
Horace joined the United States Navy November 18, 1944, serving in World War II, where he learned the trade to become an electrician. He was honorably discharged  October 16, 1945. Horace was united in marriage with Edith Rose Roeder in 1940; she passed away in 1959. He then married Amber Rutter  June 16, 1963 at Freeman Church, rural Ferryville, WI.
Horace worked for 32 years at the United States Postal Service. He also worked for the Iowa Fish and Wildlife Commission and was a coach for baseball and basketball at Immaculate Conception Catholic High School for many years. Horace enjoyed playing music with various dance bands throughout the region, golfing, fishing, hunting, playing cards, dancing, camping, playing piano, singing in the choir at church and was an avid reader. Horace was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, served as church president and on the church council for many years. He played music every Wednesday for the residents at Thornton Manor ever since they opened. Horace made his own CD at age 90 in 2009, “Gather at the River.”
Horace is survived by his wife, Amber, of Lansing; eight children, Tom Magnusson of Lansing, Karel (John) Sims of Milton, FL, Bob (Shirlee) Magnusson of Erksine, MN, Judy (special friend, Bill Couch) Lowther of Pensacola, FL, Roy Magnusson of Lansing, Pat (Garey) Dyb-Ferguson of Fairmont, MN, Shirley (Bill) Dyb-Sinnott of Waterloo, Ron (Val) Dyb of Ettrick, WI; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Horace was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith; his parents; two brothers, Frank and Arthur; and three sisters, Hermes, Elsie and Jean.
According to Horace’s wishes, his body has been donated to Medical Sciences.
Visitation was held Sunday, December 28 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing. A memorial service was held Monday, December 29 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Rev. Laura Gentry as the officiant.
Inurnment will be at a later date.
Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Lansing, is helping the family with the arrangements.
