Home ›Allamakee Community School District considering movement of sixth grade classrooms, administrative changes
by Brianne Eilers
The Allamakee Community School District (ACSD) Board of Education met for a special work session Monday evening, January 12 to discuss the possibility of transferring all sixth grade students from East Elementary and Waterville Elementary schools to the Junior High/High School building, as well as options for administrative restructuring. A letter was sent home to parents within the school district last week addressing the advantages and disadvantages of such a move, as well as attempting to address some frequently asked questions in regard to the matter. This move would not involve the sixth grade class at St. Patrick Elementary School in Waukon.
ACSD Superintendent Dave Herold presented information regarding how the sixth grade students would be accommodated for at the junior high/high school and explained the reasoning behind these proposed changes. The main focus in moving the sixth graders to one building is that the district feels this would be the best way to serve the students in many aspects of their development.
The sixth grade class for the next school year contains a total of 67 students. The proposed classrooms for these students would be located in the junior high building, next to the offices, with the elimination of computer labs due to the schools' 1:1 Initiative student laptop program and other efficiencies having freed up the necessary classroom space to accommodate the new students.
