The Waukon wrestling team wrestled another full late-week slate of six dual matches, winning half of those bouts to come away with a consolation championship at the Decorah Duals Tournament over the weekend. Prior to their consolation title, the Indians were once again victimized by the three forfeits they have to give up, falling to Decorah at home by a 51-24 final result after battling the Vikings to a 21-21 tie early on. The Tribe’s Decorah Duals competition saw them wrestle to a third-place finish in a four-team pool with losses of 46-30 to South Winneshiek and 54-21 to Western Dubuque and a 55-15 win over Decorah’s junior varsity squad before winning its four-team consolation bracket with dual wins of 48-20 over Turkey Valley and 66-6 over Postville and not having to wrestle Decorah’s JV again due to their previous pool round win over the younger Vikings.
The Indians now hold an overall record of 7-15, 0-5 in the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC). The Indians will next host both Oelwein and Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, January 22 for their final dual meet competition of the regular season before competing in the Riceville Tournament Saturday, January 24. The Tribe will then prepare for the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament to be held at New Hampton Saturday, January 31 before opening postseason tournament competition at their Class 2A Sectional Tournament being hosted by North Fayette Valley in West Union Saturday, February 7.
