Waukon softball team falls to Class 4A 12th-rated Waverly-SR, defeats Central in opening week

Waukon softball junior catcher Bethany Stock puts the tag on this sliding Waverly-Shell Rock baserunner to end the third inning of the Indians’ 8-0 first-game loss in a home doubleheader sweep suffered by the Indians at the hands of the 12th-rated Go-Hawks Thursday, May 28. The out at home actually completed a double play, as Stock took a throw from sophomore first baseman Deana Schlitter in time for the tag after Schlitter had recorded the first out on a throw from senior shortstop Allie Schwartz. The Waukon softball team opened its 2015 season with a three-game home stand, having to postpone its original Tuesday, May 26 season-opener due to rainy weather but ultimately making that postponement worth the wait with a thrilling, 5-4 victory over Central Elkader Friday, May 29. Prior to that first win of the season, the softball Tribe was dealt a doubleheader sweep at home Thursday, May 28 by Class 4A 12th-rated Waverly-Shell Rock by scores of 8-0 and 10-0 in six innings.
Off to a 1-2 start, the Indians will host MFL/MarMac Wednesday, June 3 before hitting the road for the first time this season with a Northeast Iowa Conference match-up at Charles City Thursday, June 4. The softball Tribe will then return to Charles City for a weekend tournament Saturday, June 6 before hosting three more nights of softball, Monday, June 8 against Decorah, Tuesday, June 9 against South Winneshiek and Thursday, June 11 against New Hampton.
