Waukon softball team wins final two of busy seven-game schedule this week

Waukon softball sophomore center fielder Erika Johnson secures this running catch for a fifth-inning out in the Indians’ 4-0 home loss to Charles City Monday, June 22. Johnson tried to help along a late Indian rally by reaching base on an error in the seventh inning, but was one of five Indians left stranded on the basepaths in the ballgame. The Waukon softball team brushed aside what had amounted to a 10-game losing streak during a recent three-week winless stretch, winning the final two games out of seven played this past week to finish fifth at the Decorah Tournament Saturday, June 27. The softball Tribe first suffered four more losses in Northeast Iowa Conference play during the week, giving away a 4-0 loss at home to Charles City Monday, June 22 before falling at Class 3A 10th-rated Crestwood, 12-2 in five innings, in a June 15 make-up game played Tuesday, June 23. The softball Tribe was then swept at Decorah Wednesday, June 24 by scores of 2-1 and 7-1 before winning two of three games at the Decorah Tournament that included a 2-0 first-round loss to Class 4A Perry and wins of 11-5 and 11-3 over Osage and Turkey Valley, respectively. A Thursday, June 25 home doubleheader with Oelwein was removed from the Indians’ schedule due to Oelwein not fielding a varsity softball team this season.
Holding a 6-14 overall record, 1-9 in the Northeast Iowa Conference, the Indians were scheduled to wrap up their regular season this week, beginning with three consecutive games with New Hampton that include a June 11 make-up date at home with the Chickasaws Monday, June 29 and a road doubleheader at New Hampton Tuesday, June 30. That week and regular season will then wrap up at home with a doubleheader with Class 3A 14th-rated Crestwood Thursday, July 2. A Wednesday, July 1 home date with Kee has been canceled due to Kee being rained out against MFL/MarMac Monday, June 29 and having to make up that Upper Iowa Conference game July 1.
The softball Tribe will then begin postseason tournament play Wednesday, July 8 at North Fayette Valley.
