Sheriff's Department responds to three calls involving firearms, several arrests made

It was a busy Labor Day weekend for the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Department, as officers responded to several serious incidents, including an accidental shooting Saturday night, September 5, a motor vehicle accident Sunday, September 6 that led to two arrests, and a report of shots fired and an arrest Monday, September 7.

The Sheriff’s Department received a report at around 10 p.m. Saturday night, September 5 that a 15-year-old boy accidentally discharged a small caliber revolver at a residence on Hickory Creek Road in rural southern Allamakee County, hitting himself in the hand and leg. The child was transported to Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Early Sunday morning, September 6, at approximately 1:52 a.m., the Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a single-vehicle accident on Lansing Harpers Road west of Harpers Ferry. It was reported that three individuals were in the vehicle and that two fled the scene on foot. When deputies arrived at the scene, one person was found in the vehicle and the K-9 unit located illegal narcotics in the vehicle. A firearm was also found in the vehicle. The K-9 unit was also able to locate one of the individuals who fled on foot; the third person was not located.
Thomas James Nelson of Tomah, WI, age 31, was arrested and charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Possession of a Prescription Drug, Possession of Marijuana (third or subsequent offense) and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Michael James Nissalke, Jr. of La Crosse, WI, age 27, was arrested and charged with Consumption/Intoxication.

Monday night, September 7 at approximately 11:36 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department received a report of child custody dispute involving a firearm and a shot fired at a farm located on McCabe Drive. Denver Paul Halverson of rural Waukon, age 32, was taken into custody without incident and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent and/or Display of a Weapon, Going Armed With Intent and Child Endangerment (no injury).
A child who was at the residence at the time of the incident was not harmed and was turned over to family members. No injuries were reported in regard to the incident. Numerous firearms were seized during execution of a search warrant at the residence.
