For the second consecutive season, the Waukon boys cross country team closed out its fall campaign where every high school cross country team wants to be, the State Meet season grand finale held Saturday, October 31 at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge. Looking to improve on the 14th-place finish they managed at last season’s Class 2A State Meet, and returning every one of their qualified competitors from that season grand finale from a year ago, the Indians did just that, running to a 12th-place team finish in the 15-team Class 2A field.
With four seniors and three juniors, the Indians featured one of the most veteran teams competing in this fall’s Class 2A field, being the only team in that field to have no sophomores or freshmen competing in the season finale. Only Monticello, the lone team to finish ahead of the Indians at their State Qualifying Meet more than a week earlier, fielded more seniors than Waukon with five, along with one junior and one sophomore that helped the Panthers place third in Saturday’s finale. Aplington-Parkersburg, who finished 10th in the Class 2A State Meet competition, also fielded four seniors, including the individual champion, C.J. May, who completed the 5K course in a time of 15:55.0.
