Local Youth Caucus results in line with the rest of the state

Democrat Bernie Sanders, Republican Ben Carson lead results at both levels

The first statewide, bipartisan Iowa Youth Caucus was held the evening of Thursday, November 19, with 22 counties in the state of Iowa participating, including Allamakee County. The events were organized by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate’s office, in conjunction with the Republican Party of Iowa and the Iowa Democratic Party.
Iowa high school and middle school students took part in both a Republican and Democratic mock caucus, and cast votes for the presidential candidate of their choice for both parties. More than 1,600 students registered to take part in the Iowa Youth Caucus.
“I hope this was a fun, educational event for the students that will spur them to become involved and participate in civics in their community,” Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said. “I’d like to thank the Republican and Democratic parties in each county for organizing this event and showing their dedication to Iowa’s youth.”
Locally, Waukon High School hosted the Youth Caucus for Allamakee County schools. Kristi Hager chaired the Republican Caucus and Ann Hart chaired the Democratic Caucus. Student participants indicated the experience was informative, educational and "lots of fun," according to event organizers.
Local results indicate that Ben Carson won the favor of local high school students participating in the Republican Caucus, claiming 30% of the votes cast. On the Democratic side, Bernie Sanders garnered 42.11% of the local vote. Both those front-runners in the local results fell in line with statewide results as well, although Sanders won 52.74% of the statewide Democratic vote and Carson was awarded less favor, 22.35%, in statewide Republican results.
