The Waukon baseball team wrapped up its regular season on a losing note but began its postseason with a dramatic win to keep its 2016 season rolling. The Indians brought their regular season to completion with three final home losses in Northeast Iowa Conference play, falling to Class 2A third-rated New Hampton Tuesday, July 5 by scores of 16-0 in four innings and 14-0 in five frames before doing likewise to Crestwood by a 12-3 final result. The Indians waited until the final inning of their Class 2A district tournament opener to finally pull out a 1-0 victory over Sumner-Fredericksburg at home Saturday, July 9, that victory being the first postseason win for the Indians since the 2011 season and this being the first year the Indians have not played in the Class 3A tournament bracket.

That first-round district tournament victory advanced the Indians to the Class 2A District 6 semifinals Tuesday, July 12 at 7 p.m. The Indians will take their now 7-21 season record that includes a seventh-place 2-16 Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) mark into the home of fellow NEIC squad, third-rated New Hampton, for a chance to advance even further into the postseason. Tuesday’s winner advances on to the District 6 championship Saturday, July 16, again at New Hampton beginning at 7 p.m., with a win there earning advancement to the Tuesday, July 19 Substate 3 championship to be played at Waverly-Shell Rock at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to the Class 2A State Tournament in Des Moines.
