Capitalizing on turnovers helps Waukon football team stay undefeated in District 4 with 20-14 home triumph over Cascade

The Waukon football team benefited from four Cascade turnovers in its 20-14 home victory over the Cougars in District 4 action Friday, September 16, including this one pictured. In the photo above, the Waukon junior pair of Evan Armstead (#4 on the ground) and Tristan Hansmeier (#24 at left) scrambled after this loose football coughed up by Cascade junior Austin Lieurance, with the photo below showing the result of that scramble as the game officials indicate and the Waukon players celebrate Hansmeier’s recovery of the fumble. Senior Andrew Dickson recovered a second fumble in the ballgame, and junior Mitchell Snitker also picked off a pair of interceptions, with three of those four turnovers being capitalized on immediately with Indian touchdowns in their ensuing series. In a game that may likely have play-off repercussions despite being played so early in the season, the Waukon football team played host to Cascade Friday, September 16 in a match-up between two teams battling with overall undefeated Class 2A District 4 colleagues Union of LaPorte City and North Fayette Valley atop the District standings. In trying to take care of that District 4 business, it was the team that took care of the ball best that ended up remaining among the District’s unbeatens, as the football Indians took advantage of two Cascade fumbles and two interceptions to come away with a 20-14 home victory.

Improving to 2-0 in Class 2A District 4 play and advancing their season record to 3-1 on the year, the Indians will next travel to Waterloo Columbus in District 4 play this Friday, September 23. The Sailors are 1-3 on the season, with their lone win being a 14-6 District 4 triumph at Oelwein two Fridays ago. Columbus comes off a 40-6 home loss to Dyersville Beckman in District 4 play this past Friday.

“We are thrilled with the win against Cascade, but we still have plenty to work on,” Coach Beermann said. “We now head to Columbus to face a team that staged a furious second half comeback last year against us and nearly pulled off the upset.”
