Waukon football team improves its State Play-Off hopes with 48-8 road rout of Oelwein

A somewhat depleted Waukon football team riddled by injury from its first Class 2A District 4 loss of the season a week earlier showed little sign of that depletion in dominating a winless Oelwein squad on the road Friday, October 14. Minus their first and second string quarterbacks and most veteran wide receiver, the Indians, instead, ran rampant over the host Huskies and limited Oelwein to just 122 yards of total offense in posting a 48-8 victory, more than half of those Husky yards coming in the fourth quarter of the ballgame.

“We stressed the importance of each player doing his job, pointing out the absence of other players does not impact each individual’s performance,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “Basically, if I am left tackle, it does not matter who is carrying the ball, I have a job to do.”

Ultimately, the pairings for the 2016 Iowa High School Football State Play-Offs will be announced via webcast this Saturday morning, October 22 on the Iowa High School Sports Network website at www.ihssn.com. Those pairings announcements will be made beginning at 10 a.m. The State Play-Offs are scheduled to begin the following Friday, October 28.

“A win gets us in as a co-champ,” Coach Beermann said. “A close loss might get us in, based on the 17-point margin the IHSAA uses.  That then depends on other districts, and even some results yet to be settled Friday.  Even a bad loss could see us in if other teams struggle too.  Obviously, the best option would be to win.”
