A slow start to the ballgame eventually played out to a good start to the season for the Waukon boys basketball team, as the Indians opened their 2016-2017 campaign with a 76-43 home win over Postville Monday, November 28. Finding themselves in a 12-0 hole after nearly five scoreless minutes to open the contest, the basketball Indians finally found their offensive groove to outscore the visiting Pirates by a 15-2 count through the final three minutes of that opening frame and then post a 24-10 outscoring of Postville in the second quarter to bolt to a 39-24 halftime advantage on the way to the non-conference victory.

The Indians couldn’t seem to even buy a basket as the game got underway, but Postville had little trouble in that same timeframe, dropping in a trio of three-point splashes to push the Indians into that 12-0 hole nearly five minutes into the ballgame. The Tribe, however, turned the tables on the visiting Pirates over the final three minutes of that opening frame, ramping up its defensive effort in limiting them to just a pair of free throws while finally putting its offense in gear for a final 15-2 comeback effort that edged the Indians to a 15-14 lead at the end of the opening quarter of play.

The Indians will now have to wait until Friday, December 9 for their next contest, playing at Oelwein for their Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) opener. The Tribe will then host last season’s top two NEIC teams, playing runner-up Crestwood Tuesday, December 13 and then defending champion Waverly-Shell Rock Friday, December 16.
