Lansing City Council advised of snow removal issues due to parked vehicles not being moved; may be cited or towed

The Lansing City Council met in a special session Monday, December 12 to replace its regular December 5 meeting which was postponed due to a required quorum of council members being unavailable to hold an official meeting that evening. After making four minor corrections to the financial report, the Council approved the Consent Agenda.

The Council discussed various problems associated with the recent snowstorm. There are still several parked cars piled with snow, some of which have not been moved, resulting in snowplows being unable to clean the streets effectively. If not moved soon, citations will be issued and/or the cars will be towed.

Police Chief Ed Stahl reported a very busy day due to an out-of-state inebriated driver whose erratic driving resulted in smashed mailboxes; the car then hit a telephone pole and slid off the road into a ditch near Whalen Hill Road. The driver, who was arrested, was not injured and the only damage sustained by the vehicle was a broken mirror.

Stahl also submitted activity reports for October and November. The report indicates there were 44 general complaint calls, seven warrants, three traffic citations and three search warrants in October. The November report included 46 general complaint calls, 29 traffic warnings, two citations, three domestic abuse calls and three OWIs. A total of seven car/deer accidents were reported for the two-month period.

Lansing City Clerk Katie Becker reported that the Lansing Lions Club was awarded a $10,000 grant for its Sports Complex playground equipment project, and another $1000 was received from a private donor. The $60,000 project will provide new, safe playground equipment that is educational and handicap accessible. The plan also includes a bicycle rack, sidewalks and benches. Those who are interested in donating to the project should contact Campaign Chairman Arlen Wonderlich at 515-708-2279.

Becker also reminded the Council that budget work sessions will commence in January the Mondays that Council meetings are not held. Times of the budget meetings will be announced. She and the Council discussed whether an additional December council meeting will be necessary;  everyone will be notified when a decision is made.
