There’s still time to join Live Healthy Iowa

Veterans Memorial Hospital is encouraging individuals in the area communities to sign up to participate in Live Healthy Iowa for the next 10 weeks. The Live Healthy Iowa web-based program offers many advantages over the hospital’s previous In-Step program, including personal online fitness tracking, weekly motivational emails and unlimited access to recipes, workouts and other health information, all easily accessible on the Live Healthy Iowa website.

Registration for Live Healthy Iowa is going on now. The cost to participate in Live Healthy Iowa includes a Live Healthy Iowa t-shirt and a free magazine subscription to one of many popular magazines. To get a team signed up, go to www.livehealthyiowa.org and click the sign-up button.

Veterans Memorial Hospital is also teaming up during Live Healthy Iowa with the local schools, attending various sporting events and handing out information on sports nutrition and sports injury prevention as well as information on the new community wellness testing opportunities at the hospital.

Veterans Memorial Hospital began offering these wellness tests to help accommodate those individuals with rising health insurance premiums and deductibles that would forgo these important tests due to the cost. Individuals now have the option from a menu of wellness tests during select hours. While these tests do not take the place of regular medical care, they are a tool for patients to monitor their own health and wellness.

Anyone in the community is welcome to walk into the Lab between 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and request any of a number of tests, all without a physician’s order. Results are mailed to the individual within five business days.

The following blood tests are offered at a low, individual, out-of-pocket rate:  Cholesterol, Blood Sugar/Diabetes, Thyroid, Kidney Function, Uric Acid, Hemoglobin, Calcium, Liver Function, Vitamin D, Prostate Health, Potassium and Sodium.

Anyone interested in this service is asked to enter Veterans Memorial Hospital’s main entrance, stopping at the reception desk to register. The receptionist will provide a Community Wellness form. Individuals can then choose the test option(s) they would like to have performed. Otherwise, interested individuals can visit the hospital’s website at www.veteransmemorialhospital.com to download the community wellness testing form. The results will be mailed to the individual to share with their medical provider, if they wish.

The Live Healthy Iowa 10-week challenge runs through April 1. Veterans Memorial Hospital will then be awarding all those in the 10-week challenge with a participation prize at its annual wellness fair May 10.
