Norbert Duffy

Norbert "Bud" E. Duffy, 94, of Waukon died Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Monday, April 17 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 3:30 p.m. scripture service.

Norbert Earl Duffy was born October 10, 1922 in rural Oelwein, the son of Earl and Ethel (Kobbe) Duffy. He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1940. Norbert also graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1950, and attended Iowa State University in Ames, where he received is teaching certificate. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946 as a corporal in France as part of the 13th Airborne Division, 676 Glider Field Artillery Battalion.

October 14, 1950, he married Mary Helen O'Brien at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. Norbert taught algebra, agriculture, and FFA in Blairsburg. He owned and operated Duffy's Feed Store in Charles City for several years. In 1963, he and Mary moved to Waukon, where he taught agriculture and was the FFA instructor at Waukon High School until he retired in 1982.

Norbert was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus - where served as a former Grand Knight, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed reading, woodworking, fishing and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his children: Bert (Jenny Erhnst) Duffy of Minneapolis, MN, Helen (Bill Chorneau) Duffy of Oakland, CA, Greg (Val) Duffy of Boise, ID, Karen (Tom) Regan of Waukon, Dan Duffy of Sacramento, CA and Tom (Gena) Duffy of Fuquay Varina, NC; 12 grandchildren: Jerry Regan, Jessica (Jerry) Keenan, Abe (Brandy) Regan, Claire (Travis) Boyle, Noah Regan, Lisa and Brien Duffy, Irene (Charles) Stevens, Lizzy (Eric Anderson) Duffy, Jade Duffy, and Cedric, Toby and Veda Duffy; and eight great-grandchildren: Will, Laurel, Josh and Nate Keenan, Linley and Ashton Regan, Logan and Liam Boyle, and one due in Idaho.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, who died in 2011; and his sisters and brothers-in-law: Kathleen (Kenny) Brant, Joan (Delbert) Masters, and Miles (Cora) O’Brien.

Honorary casketbearers are Wally Johnson, Ruth O'Brien Lau and Ozzie Quandahl. Casketbearers are Jerry, Abe and Noah Regan, Travis Boyle, Jerry and Will Keenan, and Brien Duffy.
