Gary Nolting

Gary L. Nolting, 68, of Waukon passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at his home in rural Waukon surrounded by his family. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 16 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Gary Lynn Nolting was born September 19, 1948 at Decorah Hospital in Decorah, the son of Melvin and Eleanor (Stock) Nolting. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Gary graduated from Waukon High School and October 15, 1966 he married his loving wife, Faye Werden, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home on Gary’s family’s Century Farm where they proceeded to raise five children all while operating a dairy farm together. He loved farming, especially tending to his cows and showing cattle.

Gary loved gardening and landscaping. He grew vegetables and flowers, planted trees, and always had red rose bushes. He and Faye liked to go for drives and would always manage to end up at a nursery or greenhouse. When he was younger, Gary enjoyed fishing, coon hunting with friends and driving stock cars. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. Gary was a very quiet man with a strong, calm presence and never-ending patience. His work ethic, kind demeanor and smile will be remembered by many.

He is survived by his wife, Faye, of rural Waukon; his children: Amy (George) Opperman and Chad (Cheryl) Nolting, both of Waukon, Sarah (Tim) Anfinson of Decorah and Kati Nolting of Waukon; his grandchildren: Caleb (fiancée Karina Day) Opperman, Chance and Claire Opperman, Cayla and Carter Nolting, and Brody, Brooke and Brock Anfinson; and his two sisters: LaVonne (Ernest) Palas and Joyce (Eugene) Knox, both of Waukon. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Todd Nolting; and a grandson, Cade Nolting.

Honorary casketbearers were Brock Anfinson, Darrell Baumgartner, Lynn Folsom, Don Kruse, Tim Phipps and Landon Reinhardt. Casketbearers were Caleb and Chance Opperman, Carter Nolting, Brody Anfinson, Steve Knox and Tyler O'Neill.
