Veterans Memorial Hospital will be hosting its bi-annual Safety Day Camp for children ages six to 14  Thursday, June 8 at the Allamakee Fairgrounds from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is open to all children in the area.  It is a true safety camp that instructs many areas of safety that address every child’s life.

Each year, many children are killed or injured on America’s farms and at home. This summer, safety day camps, such as the one being hosted by Veterans Memorial Hospital, are being held to teach children how to prevent injuries and reduce the risk of accidents.

During the camps, children participate in interactive activities that reinforce the importance of taking responsibility for their own safety, respecting parents’ safety rules and sharing safety tips with their family and friends.

Individual topics covered at this year’s safety camp will include the following:
- ATV, Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety
- First Aid
- Electrical Safety
- Farm Equipment Safety
- Grain Bin Safety
- Camping Safety and Survival Skills
- Firearm and Archery Safety
 - Kitchen and Food Safety
- Lawnmowers/Chainsaws/Weed Eater/Pinch Point Safety
- Bicycle Safety/Rodeo
- How to Stay Safe at Home
- Drone Safety
- Fire Arm Safety.

There will also be large group demonstrations showing power take-off entanglement and  heavy gates or a tractor dual falling on an object.

Parents can register their children to participate in the camp by picking up a registration form at the main entrance of Veterans Memorial Hospital or from the Allamakee County Extension Office, or register for the camp online at www.veteransmemorialhospital.com.

Registrations must be returned to the hospital. Only the first 150 applications will be accepted. A $15 registration fee for the event covers lunch, snacks, a take-home goodie bag, first aid kit and a safety day camp t-shirt.
