In Waukon...
The annual Memorial Day Observance held May 29 in Waukon featured delivery of the Memorial Day Address by Rev. Dr. William Reese (pictured at far left), a Vietnam Veteran from Viroqua, WI. Along with the more traditional Memorial Day Observance that included the parade through Waukon and the program held at Oakland Cemetery, a surprise was sprung on Waukon area native and 1984 Waukon High School graduate Andrew Lonning, who was honored for his retirement from the U.S. Army following a career spanning nearly three decades and featuring ascension to the rank of Command Sergeant Major. In the photo at right, Lonning's high school classmate, Master Sergeant Kevin Herman, U.S. Army, Retired (right in photo) presented Lonning (left in photo) with a certificate plaque commemorating his retirement. Quilts of Valor were also bestowed on several local veterans (pictured at immediate left) during Monday's observance program. Photos by Robin Johnson.

In Harpers Ferry ...
The annual Memorial Day observance in Harpers Ferry was held Monday, May 29. The traditional parade continues its strong showing, being graced this year by the traveling monument paying tribute to Northeast Iowa Vietnam Veterans (pictured above). Following the parade, the annual observance program took place at the site of the Veterans Memorial (pictured at left) located near the center of the community, with the memorial monument (pictured at right) once again being adorned with wreaths in honor of local veterans. In Lansing ...
The annual Memorial Day observance in Lansing took place Monday, May 29. Lansing resident Dr. Arlen Wonderlich (pictured at immediate right) presented this year's Memorial Day Address at Oak Hill Cemetery. Among the many events held at various locations throughout Lansing's Memorial Day Observance was the raising of the American flag at Thornton Manor by local VFW and Legion members (pictured at far right), with some of the residents and visitors (pictured below) of the facility observing the ceremony being veterans themselves. In New Albin ...
Although the skies began to cloud up, the spirit of the 2017 Memorial Day Observance in New Albin shined bright at the annual event held Monday, May 29. Retired Air Force Major John Colsch (pictured below at right) delivered this year's Memorial Day Address, with bugler David Steele (pictured below at left) providing the somber tune of TAPS at both the ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial in New Albin City Park and at this year's observance ceremony held at Sand Cove Pioneer Cemetery (pictured at left).
