And then I wrote...

... that I watched a good portion of the Comey appearance before that senate committee. When you are retired, you can do things like that.

There is no way I am going to comment at this point on who is lying in the Comey-Trump “he said, he said” meeting. Eventually the truth may come out, but I doubt it.

What I came away with was an opinion that among things that have changed in the last half century may be the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

I have noted here before that I enjoy listening to old time radio shows on Wisconsin Public Radio Saturday and Sunday evenings, preferring that to the banality of television. Among the programs from time to time are episodes of “The FBI, In Peace and War.” As the title implies, the show dates back to the World War II era.

What suggested the change was the testimony of Comey that certain meetings with the president or with the attorney general of the previous administration made him uneasy, queasy or nauseous. That he was afraid to be alone with the president in particular.

When the fired FBI head walked away with an entourage, he stood a head taller than any of them. I think I heard he is 6’7” tall, and looks to weigh well over 200 pounds.

The old time radio show features mostly field agents. I don’t know if Comey ever was one.

But those field agents did not wimp out even when challenged physically, and there was no testimony or even hint that the 70-year-old president or the short, rather tubby black former attorney general presented any sort of physical threat.

Rather, it apparently was words that bothered him.

In fact, in response to one question, Comey said he guessed he did not act “like Captain Courageous” in the meetings. Ya think?

His actions seemed to reverse the old “sticks and stones” argument. Instead, it seemed he was saying sticks and stones would not break his bones, but words most surely hurt him.

I don’t know who the new FBI head will be, but I hope he binge listens to a series of those old radio shows for hints on how to behave.

With examples from Hoover and Comey to overcome, he has an important challenge.

Speaking of challenges, the Chicago Cubs were the talk of the country last year at this time with their magnificent start toward a World Series win. They are the talk of the country again this summer with the inability of pretty much the same team to stay above .500 in the standings

And there’s no help from their AAA club. The Iowa Cubs are dead last!
