Waukon baseball team wins big over Osage, falls hard to New Hampton and Oelwein

Waukon baseball senior pitcher Tyler O’Neill reaches back on his way to throwing a pitch in the final inning of the Indians’ 14-3 win over Osage at home in five innings Tuesday, June 13. In addition to throwing the game’s final inning without giving up a hit or a run, O’Neill also recorded three singles in three at-bats in the contest, driving in two runs and scoring two as well. The Waukon baseball team ended up on each side of a string of mercy-rule final results this past week, unfortunately ending up on the losing side of that result in two of three contests. The Indians’ week began and ended with weather-impacted contests, a Monday, June 12 game at Oelwein being suspended in the third inning until Thursday, June 15 and a similar situation unfolding in a Friday, June 16 doubleheader at home against Crestwood, where the Tribe was in the third inning of game one with the Cadets when rain suspended that game also. The Cadets were scheduled to return to Waukon Tuesday, June 20 to finish up both the suspended game and the second half of that home twinbill.

In between those two rain-outs, the Indians ended up completing three games that were, instead, shortened by mercy rule. The first of those was a 14-3 victory at home over Osage in five innings Tuesday, June 13 that was followed by a 19-2 home loss in five innings to Class 2A second-rated New Hampton Wednesday, June 14. The Indians then finished up that Monday, June 12 suspended game at Oelwein Thursday, June 15, allowing just a 5-3 deficit at the time of Monday’s suspension to balloon to a 13-3 loss in five innings after play resumed Thursday.

Holding a season record of 3-10, including a yet winless mark of 0-7 in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Indians were next scheduled to host Waverly-Shell Rock Monday, June 19 in a change from the original schedule due to a broken water pipe that forced the Indians to play their originally scheduled home doubleheader with the Go-s at Waverly earlier this season. The Tribe will then remain at home to host Starmont Wednesday, June 21, Charles City Friday, June 23 and their own home Jeff Houg Tournament Saturday, June 24, details of which appear in a shaded box elsewhere on these Sports pages. The baseball Tribe will then host Decorah for a doubleheader Tuesday, June 27, play at Postville Thursday, June 29 and then host another doubleheader against Oelwein Friday, June 30.
