“Get Your Walk On in Waukon” Family Fun Walk with optional 5K during Waukon Corn Days is a free event

Family Fun Walk with optional 5K ... Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon will be sponsoring its 24th annual family fun walk/run Saturday, August 19, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event welcomes a shorter, 1.5 mile walking route with an optional 5K (3.1 mile) route to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate. The route is pictured above. Anyone wishing to complete just the 1.5 mile route around the golf course is welcome to return to the hospital as they round that corner, or they may continue on to complete the entire 5K if they wish. Again, this year, this is being offered as a free event to the entire community. Submitted image.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring its 24th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 19, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event welcomes a shorter 1.5 mile walking route with an optional 5K (3.1 mile) route to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate. The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon with an  8 a.m. start time and registration beginning at 7 a.m.

This is a free wellness event for all ages. Anyone in the area communities is welcome to attend and enjoy a walk or run around the scenic city of Waukon. The first distance offered on the route is a 1.5 mile loop around the hospital campus and golf course.  Participants may choose to return to the hospital at that point, or go the entire distance of the 5K, or 3.1 miles, that will continue around the city streets of Waukon before returning to the hospital campus.

Free diabetes/blood sugar tests will be offered by the hospital’s Diabetes Education Department as well as free hemoglobin tests by the hospital’s Laboratory Department at the event. Free chair massages will also be offered by the hospital’s massage therapist, Edna Wyninger.

There is no pre-registration. All those interested in participating in the event are asked to arrive between 7-7:45 a.m. to register. Because this is a free event, there will not be any awards given for the 5K run; however, a large race clock will be on display so all those attending can keep track of their own race time.

All participants will receive a VMH tote bag and goodies for participating.  Light refreshments will be served following the Fun Run/Walk in addition to a variety of free wellness tests offered including free blood sugar/diabetes tests, free hemoglobin tests and massages.

Representatives from the Healthiest State Initiative will be on site as well to promote the upcoming community and state-wide walk October 4. Information and maps on the Walk More/Connect More website for all area communities in the hospital’s service area will also be available.

The event will be completed in plenty of time for participants to enjoy the Corn Days breakfast being served downtown that morning.

Those who have any questions concerning the event may call Erin Berns, Public Relations Director, at Veterans Memorial Hospital at 563-568-3411.
