Janice Kurth

Janice Elaine (Grahlman) Kurth, 77, of Waukon died Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, WI. In accordance with Janice's wishes, there will be no formal services. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Sunday, September 17 from 2-4 p.m. at the Farm Bureau building in Waukon, located at 14 First Avenue NE. Lunch will be provided.

Janice was born in Sumner to Clayton and Emerald (Sires) Grahlman. She attended New Albin and Waukon schools. Janice was united in marriage to Walter Kurth, Jr. September 15, 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church in Waukon and together they raised two children on the family farm south of Waukon.

As a youth, Janice recalled memories of going to the "Islands" on the Mississippi River near New Albin. She loved to swim, rollerskate and jitterbug with her sister, June. She worked on the dairy farm milking cows, baling hay and doing chores. She taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church in Volney and worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon over 32 years.

Janice enjoyed sports and was an Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packer fan. She always amazed her family by knowing sports trivia. After working all day, then helping with chores and making supper, she still took time to play softball or croquet with her children, nieces, nephews and neighborhood kids. She enjoyed time with her family.

Janice is survived by her husband, Walter; two children, Deborah (Christian) Funk of Elkader and David (Darcy) Kurth of Arlington; a sister, June Sweeney; a brother, James (Sarah) Grahlman; a brother in-law, Gilbert (Jean) Kurth; her nieces and nephews; five grandchildren: Julie (Felix) Berger, Justin (Brianna) Jones, Emily Johnston, Jordan (Mahayla) Kurth and Joshua Yearous; and 16 great-grandchildren: Alivia, Isabelle, Draemon and Wesley Berger, Madyson, Haylie, Jayden and Cyrus Jones, Dawson and Wesley Fields, Carlee Thorstenson, William Johnston, and Savannah, Makenzie, Jaxson and Paisley Kurth.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Emerald Grahlman; her in-laws, Walter and Florence Kurth; a niece, Marsha Behrend; a brother-in-law, Gerald Kurth; and her sisters-in-law, Inez and Delores Kurth.
