John "Jack" Schulte

John "Jack" B. Schulte, 63, of Harpers Ferry, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, WI. Funeral services were held Monday, October 2 at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry with Fr. John Moser officiating.

John “Jack” Bernard Schulte was born July 26, 1954 in Cherry Valley, IL, the son of John Andrew and Laurayne Mary (Hawes) Schulte. When Jack was a young child, his family moved to Harpers Ferry, where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Jack graduated from St. George High School in Lansing and then worked various construction jobs for the next few years.

While living in Waterloo, he met Janice Renee Thompson and the two were married June 29, 1985 at St. Edward’s Church in Waterloo. Jack completed the electrical program at Hawkeye Community College and spent the rest of his career as a journeyman electrician, retiring in 2016. Jack belonged to the IBEW Local 288 Union in Waterloo. In 2015, he and Jan moved to Harpers Ferry.

An avid outdoorsman, Jack enjoyed hunting, especially for deer, turkey and duck, and fishing the Harpers sloughs. He was also a big gardener. Jack was a great craftsman; he remodeled his home in Waterloo and did some woodworking. His favorite sports teams included the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones and St. Louis Cardinals. Mostly, he loved his family and they were the most important thing to him.

Survivors include his wife, Jan; two children, Breanna and Eric Schulte; his mother, Laurayne Schulte; his brother, Lawrence (Sheryl) Schulte; his sister, Linda (Kevin) Loy; three nieces, Bethany Schulte and Michelle and Nicole Loy; and two great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Schulte.
