Waukon volleyball team battles through tough week with NEIC losses to top-15 rated foes, more rated competition at Columbus Tournament

The Waukon volleyball team played through not only its busiest week of the season but also its most challenging, as three different days of competition featured matches against top-15 ranked teams in their respective classes. A slate such as that didn’t allow for much success in the win column, as the Indians were swept in all but one of the six matches they played this past week, posting a single match win for the week.

That single-win week began with a sweep at home by Class 4A third-rated Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, September 26 by scores of 16-25, 5-25 and 11-25, which was followed by another sweep in Northeast Iowa Conference play by Class 3A 13th-rated New Hampton on the road Thursday, September 28 by scores of 21-25, 9-25 and 16-25. The Tribe netters wrapped up their difficult week Saturday, September 30 with a tournament hosted by Class 3A third-rated Waterloo Columbus, being swept in three of their four matches in that event as well. The Indians fell to the host Sailors, 11-21 and 10-21, and to Sumner-Fredericksburg, 11-21 and 14-21, in pool play, but also secured their week’s lone victory with a pool play victory over Waterloo East by scores of 21-16, 12-21 and 15-13 before also falling to BCLUW in consolation bracket play, 15-21 and 18-21, to have their tournament day ended.

Holding an 8-17-2 season record, 0-4 in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Indians were next scheduled to host Crestwood Tuesday, October 3 before playing in the Don Bosco Tournament Saturday, October 7. The volleyball Tribe will then host Class 4A 10th-rated Charles City Tuesday, October 10 to wrap up its regular season dual meet schedule before playing in the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament at Crestwood High School in Cresco Saturday, October 14.
