Indians will match up with wild card Williamsburg in Class 2A title tilt this Friday
The Waukon football team was looking for its second trip to the Class 2A State Championship game in school history when it took the field Saturday, November 11 in its State Play-Offs semifinals contest at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, but had to go through a top-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley team looking to get back to that same stage for a second consecutive year after winning last year’s Class 2A title.
The graduation of a senior group that led the Nighthawks to that title last fall still left a considerable remainder that played to this season’s final top ranking and another trip back to the UNI-Dome, but the returnees from a Waukon group that was left just outside the Class 2A State Play-Off mix last season proved they wanted to make the most of their opportunities this season, pitching a first-half shut-out and dodging an early second-half bullet before taking control of the game once again to post a 36-19 victory and earn their first trip back to the Class 2A title tilt since the Indians’ initial run that produced a State Runner-Up result in the 2013 season.
FINALS THIS FRIDAY
The win advances the Indians to their second Class 2A State Play-Off Championship game in program history, their first since the Indians finished as the Class 2A State Runner-Up in 2013. The Indians will be matched up against Williamsburg in that championship tilt this Friday, November 17 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, beginning at 2 p.m.
As evident throughout the season, the Indians’ supporting cast obviously proves to be a major factor, as the Indians lead all of Class 2A with 5,363 yards of total offense (2,981 on the ground and 2,382 through the air), with senior quarterback Abe Schwartz leading Class 2A with 2,209 passing yards. Williamsburg sits third on that list (behind the Indians’ semifinals opponent, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, as well) with 4,874 total yards (3,722 rushing yards and just 1,152 passing). The Raiders have scored at a clip of 40.1 points per game, with the Indians tallying at a rate of 45.25 points per game. Defensively, Williamsburg holds a slight edge by allowing 16 points per game, in comparison to 20 points per game allowed by the Indian defensive effort.
