James Conway

James J. Conway, 76, of Harpers Ferry died peacefully at home near Harpers Ferry Thursday, February 1, 2018. Mass of Burial will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 11 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Wexford with Rev. John Moser as the Celebrant. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery, Wexford.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. with a 3:30 p.m. Rosary and a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service Saturday, February 10 at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Lansing. There will also be a one-hour visitation before Mass at the church Sunday.

James was born March 3, 1941 at home near Harpers Ferry. He was the son of Hugh and Alice Conway and he graduated from St. George High School in Lansing in 1959. In that same year, he entered the U.S. Army and served until 1962.

November 4, 1967 he was united in marriage with Sonja Fredrickson at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Wexford. James worked construction for Brennan’s in Lansing for 38 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, walking in the woods and taking his dogs for a ride.

James is survived by two sons, Kevin (Milissa) of Lansing and Jody (Kristen) of Caledonia, MN; four grandchildren, Hailey, Kyle, Ryan and Austin Conway; his brothers, Hugh of McAllen, TX, Dan of Harpers Ferry, Mike of Waukon, John of Harpers Ferry and Ray of Polk City; and three sisters, Ellen Zwirlein of Monona, Mary O’Neill of Harpers Ferry and Rose Ripperger of Lacona.

James was preceded in death by his parents; one son during childbirth, Jamie; his wife, Sonja, in 2011; and three brothers, Joe, Leo and Pat.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Lansing assisted the family with arrangements.
