David Steele, Sr.

David Howard “Big Horse” Steele, Sr. died unexpectedly March 17, 2018 at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI at the age of 82. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31 at St. Peter’s Christian Community Church in New Albin. Rev. Dick Wohlgemuth will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Peter’s Memorial Cemetery, New Albin. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.

David was born February 25, 1936 to Howard “Dud” and Beulah “Boo” (Kester) Steele in New Albin. He graduated from New Albin High School in the Class of 1954. After graduation, David enlisted in the United States Navy and served the next four years aboard the USS NOA(DD) based in Norfolk, VA. He married Edwina Love May 17, 1958 in Caledonia, MN. The Lord blessed David and Edwina with two children, David (Tamie) Steele, Jr. and Tammy (Gale) Diersen. They made their home in New Albin.

David worked road construction with heavy equipment for ten years. He then became an electrician for IBEW and worked as a union electrician for over 30 years. In his retirement, Dave worked part time for Valley Ag in New Albin. He was a member of VFW Post 5603, the Volunteer Fire Department and St. Peter’s Christian Community Church, all of New Albin. Dave enjoyed being outdoors; his hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.

David is survived by his wife, Edwina; his daughter, Tammy  Diersen of Caledonia, MN; his daughter-in-law, Tamie (Protsman) Steele of Rosemount, MN; his sister, Nancy (Joe) Richards; his grandchildren, Dayva (Josh) Goetzinger, Breanna Steele, Julya Diersen and Nathan Steele; his great-grandchildren, Gage and Levynn Goetzinger; his Godchild, Brian Wellendorf; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Gale Diersen.
