Former teammates in one sport play against each other in a completely different one...

Cassandra Berger, left, and Ashley Fuhrman, right, took the opportunity for this photo (at right) after their respective teams matched up on the lacrosse field Wednesday, March 21 in Dubuque. Berger’s University of Dubuque Spartans defeated Fuhrman’s Clarke University Pride, 16-12, in the non-conference match-up. “Pretty cool to have two people from Waukon playing against each other in a sport that we didn’t play in high school,” Berger said when she submitted the photo. “Especially considering that we played basketball together in high school five years ago.”

Prior to their respective careers on their college lacrosse teams, both Berger and Fuhrman were part of the Waukon High School girls basketball program. Each of them is now listed as a senior defensive player on their respective college roster. Berger, the daughter of Rusty and Cynthia Berger of Waukon, is a 2012 graduate of Waukon High School and Fuhrman, the daughter of Nathan and Kathleen Block of Waukon, is a 2014 Waukon graduate who was a sophomore in the Waukon girls basketball program when Berger was playing out her senior season.

During their March 21 match, Berger recorded four ground balls and one draw control while causing two turnovers to help the University of Dubuque to the 16-12 victory. Fuhrman also caused a pair of turnovers in the Clarke loss while also picking up one ground ball as well. Both will finish out their fi nal seasons as the month of April plays out.
