Spring Migration Day Hike scheduled to take place this Saturday in Ferryville, WI

The Ferryville Tourism Council and the Mississippi Valley Conservancy will be hosting the annual International Spring Migration Day hike at Sugar Creek Bluff Natural Area this Saturday, May 12. Hikers are invited to gather at the Ferryville Village Hall, along the Great River Road (Hwy. 35) at the south end of the Village of Ferryville between 7:30 and 8 a.m. Treats, handouts and a sign-in will be available at the village hall, and the group will then carpool to the trailhead for the 8 a.m. hike.

This hike is a celebration of the Bird City Wisconsin program. Ferryville is the smallest community to be an active member of the Bird City family of over 100 Wisconsin communities. The International Spring Migration Day aspect of the hike recognizes that the warblers, orioles, tanagers and other neo-tropical migrants have traveled for weeks from their winter homes in Central America. Some will stay in the local area along the Mississippi River Flyway during the summer months and nest here, and others will continue to travel further north to nest and rear their young.

Sugar Creek Bluff is an area of 440 acres that is conserved and maintained by the Mississippi Valley Conservancy. The entrance to this property is along North Buck Creek Road and is a gradual hike opening up to a magnificent view of the river.  Spring wildflowers will also be blooming along the path.

The Mayo Health System-Franciscan Healthcare of La Crosse, WI is the co-sponsor of this Linked to the Land hike. Expert birders will be leading three separate groups for the hike, and it will be an outing for families and birders of all levels of experience. Binoculars will be available to borrow for the hike.
