Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring its 26th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 4, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event again welcomes a shorter 1.5-mile walking route with an optional 5K (3.1-mile route) to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate.

The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 8 a.m., with registration beginning at 7 a.m.

This year this event is being co-sponsored by the “Walk-On Waukon” fundraising committee, which has been raising funds for this past year to extend the walking paths in the city of Waukon. This committee has been awarded a few grants to help with the costs of this project, but many more funds are needed for these proposed expansions. “Walk-On Waukon” committee members will be onsite helping with this event and other walking events in the area this summer, and will be available to provide information and answer questions about projects. They will also be handing out information and maps from the Walk More/Connect More website for all area communities in the hospital’s service area.

This is a free wellness event for all ages. Anyone in the area communities is welcome to attend and enjoy a walk or run around the scenic city of Waukon.  The first distance offered on the route is a 1.5-mile loop around the hospital campus and golf course. Participants may choose to return to the hospital at that point, or go the entire distance of the 5K or 3.1 miles that will continue around the city streets of Waukon before returning to the hospital campus.

Free diabetes/blood sugar tests will be offered by the hospital’s Diabetes Education Department as well as free massages offered by the hospital’s massage therapist, Vicki Klepper.

There is no pre-registration. All those interested in participating in the event are asked to arrive between 7-7:45 a.m. to register. Because this is a free event, there will not be any awards given for the 5K run; however, a large race clock will be on display so all those attending can keep track of their own race time.

All participants will receive a goodie bag for participating. Light refreshments will be served following the Fun Run/Walk. Anyone who has any questions concerning the event may call Erin Berns, Public Relations Director, at Veterans Memorial Hospital at 563-568-3411.
