The Waukon girls cross country team took part in its busiest week of the season, competing in two meets to book-end the past week. The distance ladies first placed third at their own Waukon Invitational Monday, September 24, a meet rescheduled from Tuesday, September 18 due to rainy weather. The Lady Indians then finished second behind the Class 2A top-rated host squad at the Crestwood Invitational Saturday, September 29, where first-year high school cross country competitor, sophomore Maddy Waters, ran to a new school record time of 20:42.1, improving on the previous record of 20:52.67 set last season by teammate Katelyn Benzing in her sophomore season.
“We had a great team performance at Waukon and Cresco,” Waukon girls cross country coach Brett Egan said. “The big highlight from both meets was finishing six points behind Cresco, currently the number-one team in 2A. At Cresco, we had some awesome individual performances. Maddy Waters broke the school record by 10 seconds, surpassing Katelyn’s mark. I’m very happy with the progress made by all the girls in these meets as we get to the championship part of the season.”
The Indians were next scheduled to compete at the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 2 before preparing for their Northeast Iowa Conference Meet Tuesday, October 9 at Waverly. The distance Tribe will then get ready for its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet to be held Thursday, October 18 at a site yet to be officially announced.
