Waukon football team clinches Class 2A District 4 championship, automatic play-off qualification after holding off feisty Anamosa team for 44-24 victory

The Waukon football team accomplished more than just another victory with its 44-24 road win at Anamosa Friday, October 12. That win also earned the grid Tribe automatic qualification for the Class 2A State Play-Offs and a chance at what’s believed to be its first outright district championship in program history.

“We are pleased to know we have a play-off berth with one game to go,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. ‘However, we want to win the district outright. Monticello or Columbus could tie us in district wins, though we have the head-to-head (advantage for play-off qualification). We are gunning for what we believe to be Waukon’s first-ever outright district title. That would be quite the feather in the cap for this year’s seniors.”

In order to give themselves a shot at yet another first-ever piece of history under Coach Beermann, the Indian gridders had to first fend off another first-ever situation, at least in District 4 play for this season. The Tribe found itself trailing the single-win host Raiders by scores of 8-11 at halftime and 16-17 three minutes into the third quarter, and holding just a 30-24 edge three minutes into the final frame, but answered those challenges with 14 unanswered points each time to help secure the victory.

Now holding a 7-1 overall record and improving to a 4-0 mark in Class 2A District 4 play, the football Indians will wrap up their regular season with a home game this Friday, October 19 against North Fayette Valley. The TigerHawks hold a 3-5 season record that includes a 2-2 mark in Class 2A District 4 play, coming off a 35-34 home loss to Waterloo Columbus this past Friday.

“North Fayette Valley is facing their second consecutive losing season, but their kids have continued to play hard,” Coach Beermann said. “They played a nasty non-district schedule and came into district play with a 1-3 record. A rivalry has developed between our schools, and it should be a heated contest this Friday.”
